discussion Bench light suggestions

Hi ladies and gents,


I am in the market for a desk light. I work at the dining room table and I don't know what I'd be better with.


Maybe a long reach light I can clamp to the far side - the better half will let me leave it there a good while at a time cause she is great that way, or maybe I'd be better with one with a base. Also it has to have day light led's and I'm not sure if I'd be better with a magnifying glass one or not! All advice appreciated greatly as usual.

I have a height adjustable desk light it is a ring light with a magnifying glass in the centre in my opinion this is a fantastic light I will try get a pic of it up to show you.

Dougie, I have the Lifemax 250.1 floor lamp which I can recommend most highly.


It has a 6400 Kelvin bulb that replicates daylight.


Currently on sale on Amazon for under £35! I might get another!

What ever you do Dougie do not invest in a tungsten light. They are yellow in cast and also give shadows.


I have found the round (some are squarish) small fluorescent tube type best . They are high on the Kelin scale ie nearer daylight. They also do not tend to give shadows.


Working off a table a clip on type may be difficult as it may spoile the table. Also fiddly to set up. I use the clip on ( but with a bench pod fitting) which is in anglepoise format. Also have a sit on the table type with adjustable head and arm.


Both have magnifiers which a great especially for reading stupid small type instructions ?????.

You are right about the light temp, I fired all daylight led bulbs in the shed and its perfect. Coming from a photography background yellow light drives me bonkers haha

Got them all on Amazon or may be . If I can locate I will let you know. They are fluorescent. They were both, from memory, around the £30.

Just caught up on this thread and what you have there Laurie looks really good and an ideal piece of equipment. The angle poise looks ideal too


I may get one for my table


I have a standard lamp from idea that has 3 heads on it that can be adjusted but the shadow point does come into question ( the wife bought me for £45 but I may invest in this.

These are the lights I have. The second one is used but a bargain.


You may be able to source them cheaper. They seem to have "improved" in price for the retailer.


I use the smaller one as the main light. Both on at the same time with the anglepoise type to pull about to illuminate for close work.


Put into Ebay "magnifier lamp" and a number are there. The cheaper anglpoise looks a bit "cheap" compared to the Maplin one.

I have gone to Amazon and ordered a similar light, it only has 2x mag but it uses LED's and more importantly it has an aspherical lens so no distortion at the edges. I will report back as to how good it is. It was £90 delivered but there are better ones... at £170 ish! Hopefully this is a good compromise.
