discussion big mole scratchbuild

Hi guys,


as you can see I have been underground for 3 weeks, completing my large scale scratch build of the mole from thunderbirds ( as if most of you did not know ) a full scratch build no kit parts or mouldlings ,those wheels and tracks were a bit of a pain but worth the effort. the model is approx 30 inches long 14 inches high and 9 inches wide. the spiral nose was done using das modeling clay a great material to use. The model will be on display at TRANSPORT MODELS OF PRESTON from next week pop in and take a look at her in daylight she has been underground for a while. Let me know what you think and be honest this will help improve my next model project.

you could do something like this, I have no technical tools casting equipment just a steel ruler, compass model knife pencil and a pair of dividers for measuring ema glue plasticard and time and patience, nothing complicated

Hello Monica


well I do it because I love doing it, looking at a subject then breaking it down into easy pieces then making all the small parts then sticking it all together, most of the shapes are boxes (long or short ) tubes and cones. everyone thinks its hard to do but I assure you I have no fancy work tools and I just try to break things down into simple bits. The wheels on the mole are just circles then a width piece added then an edge part the small slices of hexagon rod for bolts the centre is a warm up piece of plastic held over a humbrol tin lid then the handle of a round file pushed into it to form the dome easy. here are some more build up images which may show there is nothing technical just cutting straight and glue everything together. the main body of the mole is just big tubes stuck together. I hope this helps give it a go just build what ever you want, the principal applies to everything.

I suppose the best skill I have is not cutting my fingers, I am NOT that skillful I have just been building models for a long time and with age comes experience, ( I sound like a karate master or something ).


anyway as I told Monica its just a matter of breaking down the shapes then sticking lots of bits together, and I always look at what other people have done and learn tips from them. I have also made many models which have not turned out very well but each time I learn something from them.


Have a go at something I just love to build models.

great name by the way, YES you to could do this, just cutting out circles and cutting straight lines,its not as hard as everyone makes out after all its just a kit made of parts, the only thing is you have to make the parts. The trick is to break each part of the model down into small bits most things or round square oblong etc, then make up a lot of little bits stick them together and HEY PRESTO a model is born. here are a few images of what I mean this was the willys jeep I made a few years ago from flat sheet. I hope this will inspire you

Name comes from my biking days when I was a nutter, I would do anything on a bike, my initials were k p so my mates just added nuts to the end, the real name is ken by the way. That jeep looks awesome too, I still don't think I could do it.
