It's a marketing strategy I suppose, the subject of these two kits is Pz 38 (t), so ultimately the same chassis and running gear, the Dragon 'Hetzer' being the less complicated kit with smaller parts count and the HobbyBoss kit being the original vehicle with a conventional turret with many more kit parts
So why is the smaller simpler kit box nearly twice the size of the more complex kit?

It's Kellogs cornflakes all over again, 'huge' box with contents bag inside occupying half the internal volume

Revell are worse, their boxes can be twice the size needed, it's probably because it's cheaper to buy more boxes of one size

Yep, never thought of that.
The logistics of larger boxes must be an expense too, if shipping is by volume rather than weight
