Does anyone have or know where to get these as I need a few

I don't know where to buy them, but depending on the thickness of the ferrule you try cut-down drinking straws.

Try using drinking straws mark , cut them into 2 or 3 inch pieces . You could also get them from mcdonalds etc if youve got bigger paintbrushes as these are larger diameter

I have tried straws but they are to big! Its for fine detail brushes

Deffo. drinking straws.


The straw shouldn't touch the bristles. If you try and use too small a diameter straw, you will snag some bristles when pushing on the 'straw', bending them backwards and ruining the brush.


All you need is a good fit on the brass bit or even just the end of the wood. Obviously, all that matters is the brush head itself is covered.


I just brush paint and have used drinking straws to protect my brushes for years.


You can get a huge bundle of pretty ones from Poundstretcher (other outlets are available)....or even better borrow some from Mcdonalds, although we don't condone that sort of thing, do we Tony?

Good source of coffee stirrers (which have a huge number of uses on dios) too - so I'm told! I had to buy mine as I don't use MacDonalds.

Or you could always keep the tube that comes with the brush!

If the diameter of drinking straws is too big, cut the straw to the length you want then gently cut it along the length so you can open it out into a sort of 'U-section'.


Wrap it around your brush and close it to the diameter you want by overlapping the sides of your cut, then fix it to that diameter with sellotape.


Cheap as chips and easy to make/replace as required.


PS I've used the same idea for masking small tubes such as gun barrels when painting.

Costa coffee stirrers are a useful size, if you want a thinner stick.

John sells tubing down to 2.4 mm. in diameter. I don't know whether that is the inside or external diameter. If internal, that and the slightly larger sizes that he sells might do you. If they are the ext. diameter (but I doubt it) they and larger ones should suit you.

I use a brush holder as I normally lose the plastic protectors (hobby craft £3:99) they also do a brush hanger that cleans your brushes while they hang.

Straws also make good jet exhausts if you happen to obtain a stash of them
