BT ??? I'm not happy !

Just lately we've bean having problems with our infinity broadband not a big problem but it would drop out every now and again so the mrs decided to call them and get it sorted out

She was on the phone for over an hour to get it sorted but now it's like they've turned off our infinity and we are on basic broadband !

how can a company as big as BT do something as stupid as make your broadband worse when you call them up with a problem ???!
 
All you can do Alan is look at your options.

I had some trouble with Virgin a while ago and eventually asked to terminate my contract with a view to moving to another provider. Suddenly I was a valued old customer entitled to a TV package upgrade for free and a new super hub, also free.

Don't be shy, it costs twice as much to gain a new customer as to retain an old one.

We have been paying near £20 a month for a land line rental with Jersey Telecoms.

Just found out by accident that being an OAP we can have it for £1 per month. Now that is 10 years paying £19 per month over what we should be.

Blazing lights of course every where for 10 years saying you get it for £1 if old. Trouble is they were invisible.

Going to try to recuperate some of this but my betting is NO.

Same with me Steve, I was going to cancel and to cut a long story short, we was paying just over £70 pm to just under £30 and broadband went from 10mb to 60mb, and a free v+ box.

It's harder to get a customer back once they have gone so they will do their best to keep you.

I intend to do exactly what you've said folks , I will demand an engineer come out and fix the problem or I'm going elsewhere , it's no good having a person on the end of a phone telling you what to do I've had this before with sky and it's worked ,
 
Alan, sometimes big companies seem to forget that they are supplying a service which you are paying for. They rely on customer apathy, assuming that you won't want to go to the trouble of changing your service provider. This applies to all services not just TV/Broadband/Telephone. My experience is that if you make it clear that you really will go they will become far more accommodating. It shouldn't have to be like this but sadly very often is.

I think they forget as well that if it wasn't for the likes of us paying for the servics they provide the company wouldn't be able to pay thier wages and would soon disappear.

Thanks for the replays folks , I have called them and they are sending out an engineer to check it , the reason given for what could be the cause was electrical equipment ! Now I was thinking tv ,sky and such because of a signal interfering with the broadband but no to my surprise it was the fridgefrezzer and cooker that could be interfering with it :confused: !

Must admit it's a new one on me and dosent explain how it never happened until recently
 
Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise (REIN) It's not that unusual.
 
We had a similar problem. Our internet connection was always falling out.

Got a techy to come and check things out and was told that the modem was not upto the job and the hub was out dated. When I informed him that these where as provided he went ot to the van and installed a nice new all in one jobbie with wireless.

In 'compensation' for the error and a year of chocked speed, we got bumped up to 50/50 So it does pay to have things checked out!

On a similar vein, I had trouble with the Wi-Fi connection to my printer a few months ago.

I would try to scan a picture or document from my printer, to my picture library on my laptop. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not.

As I had a 3yr replace with new insurance with PC World, I took my printer back. They replaced without any problem and threw in two packs of printer cartridges.

However on setting up said new printer, I was experiencing exactly the same problem!

Living in Hull we are on the 'Kingston Communications' phone system with Karoo, so one phone call later, (after trying to understand the over the phone techi person, explaining what I should do) the engineer arrives.

He replaces the 'Router' with an up to date version (the one we had, they installed 18mths ago) and 'Voila' exactly the same problem.

After several cups of our coffee, he pulls out some sort of meter/gizmo, and walks around the room turning electrical items off and on.

Turns out our mini radio/cd player which is situated between me and my laptop, and the printer across the room is interfering with the signal when it is switched on. So I have to either have said radio/cd player switched off when using laptop/printer, or move the radio to a position that doesn't interfere with the signal. We moved the guilty item across the room and have had no more problems since.

The thing I don't understand is, everything had worked fine for the last 18mths !!!!!!!

Ain't modern technology wonderful (not)

Out of interest, what speed are you normally getting with your Infinity connection? It's coming to my town, lots of new green BT boxes all over the place with lots of underground cables (sorry, fibre) under pavements.

We are supposed to get 20mb and at first it was that but it's only been over the last few weeks we have had problems

We already had the fibre optics in due to our estate being an old holiday park so we didn't have the hassle of road works
 
I fixed my own recently!

We were early adopters when Telewest (remember them) put fibre up our road. Recently the Wi-Fi signal was dropping out from time to time. I remembered that when first installed the technician had attenuated our signal as it was too high. That was when we were just about the only ones connected. I looked at the back of our hub (now Virgin) and sure enough there was a little attenuator handily marked 10db (which is a lot). I took it off reconnected and have been absolutely fine ever since!

Do I get a biscuit?

If you live out in the sticks like me you might just find that there is only one provider, yup, BT!! Consequently they have you by the wotsits and the threat of going somewhere else is pointless.

That is probably why it took literally weeks and many irate phone calls to get connected in the first place.
 
Sadly Richard free market economics aren't working in your case!

Richard, if you have a BT line and its registered then you can get any other providers services (apart from cabled options of course)

If its a new line then it may not have become visible in other service providers 'availability checker' as registration is sometimes a bit slow admin wise ( so BT will appear that they are the only ones you can use)

Many times I've phoned and got BT to speed up a bit with registration when installing new networks and data packages to newly built properties when I had my business.
