Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial

Hi Steve
War memorials and war graves are very emotional places to visit. I think it is important that these are kept well as a mark of respect but also as a reminder to future generations of the ultimate sacrifice a person can make.
I hope you have a good visit. I would like to see a few general photos of the cemetery.

Nice offer Steve. If you do get any requests try and let the custodians know in advance. They will highlight the name on the headstone using sand from Omaha beach (which is considered sacred to them) so it stands out better in photographs. I found this out from the custodian at the American cemetery adjacent to CWGC Brookwood on a visit there several years ago. The grass under your feet will probably be Kentucky blue grass as well…..
For those interested in this sort of thing, Brookwood is a deeply interesting place to visit. There are headstones from both world wars, from all nations, and all branches of the service, including SOE and Chelsea pensioners. It also includes headstones from the opposing forces that died as POWs and aircrew.

Very thoughtful of you Steve.

Cheers,
Richard
