Can i buy a compressor at a hardware store such as dewalt or sears brands instead of using air compressor specifically for air brushes?

dont see why not as long as you can regulate the air pressure and put the right size adapter for the hose on it

you might find they are quite noisy tho so that might be worth checking

Yes, I use a 60 gallon 2 stage compressor, you will need a regulator to step down the pressure is all.

I have a sealey compressor which I used for spraying 1/1 cars and bikes. But they are very noisy for a model room or god forbid indoors, you would all need ear defenders.

I also use an 'industrial' compresor but it is made for quiet work place. It runs off a refridgirator pump and is almost silent.

just remember a good oil filter as they can sometimes leak oil into the airflow.

Yep me too...I use a big one in the shed.

Edit...I'd recommend a water trap if you choose this route.

You can use anything, as has already been mentioned however industrial machines do not clean the air to anywhere near the same standard as a dedicated airbrush compressor so you need an oil filter/trap and a moisture trap as a minimum. I would also fit a fine filter unit as well to ensure the best quality air.

I use the same kind of unit as Ian, which is a Clarke 'Shhh' compressor on a 9 litre tank. The compressor is basically a refrigerator compressor so is nice and quiet for indoor use and has the added advantage of being available for pumping up bike tyres etc!
