discussion can microsol and micro set be used for weathering powder by humbrol or not

hi guys just wondering could microsol and microset be used in humbrol weathering powder or not, or woud i have to use their own brand to mix it with or can i just use water or woud it have to be set in place never done weathering this will be my first time on a tank that i am doing

I use mirosol and I have used humbrol weathering powders and l also use revell ones with no issues or problems

I would have thought it cheaper to use varnish. I normally use thinned Vallejo varnish with thinners. This is then sprayed on. You can also mix it thicker and cake it on like mud.

James the best thing for weathering powders is white spirit. You can do it in 2 ways.

First, mix the pigments with the white spirit to create a sludge wash & run it around features like grab handles, hatch covers, engine grilles etc.

Or apply the pigments directly to the model with an old brush, then dab another brush loaded with white spirit onto that area so it's absorbed by the pigments. Initially the pigments will go darker, but don't worry as they'll revert back to their original colour once dry.

In both cases, the white spirit will act as a 'fixer', although they won't tolerate rough handling. Adding a coat of matt varnish will hold them on much better.

Using Microsol or Microset as a mixer or fixer might well work, but it's an expensive option.
