I would think they would be doing general fighter training.Practicing firing their guns at targets,formation flying,practicing dog fighting,that sort of stuff.Dont they would have been transporting spies As only room for one in a mk1 spitfire.

From what I remember from the pilot interview on one of the rare times I watched tv, they came into service the year before the war and introduced as short distance interceptor aircraft.

They were obviously preparing for the imminent argument between the two relevant countries.
