Morning everyone,
Showing off my Feldgendarmerie on Farcebook yesterday and a friend asked me what my commission price would be... how the hell would I know?! I never been asked that question before, anybody suggestions and tips on what they do?
Thanks guys

To me, I will at least request the price of the kit/bust etc plus any materials such as bases/plaques etc and a little extra for my paints/ adhesives used or specifically purchased for the task. Then, (this is the good bit) I add a little extra for my time - this varies according to how well I like the guy, how appreciative he'd be of my efforts, and whether the proceeds are going to a good cause (such as a Service charity) and finally, did I enjoy it and was it something I'd have ordinarily bought for myself! Hope this helps!

Thanks Steve, ill be stepping out of my comfort zone, the guy wants horror characters  not something I normally dabble in! I've told him that he needs to buy the kit he wants and then work it from there.
Is it worth charging an hourly rate?

I agree with comments above.
As an ex plumber I used to do various private jobs and would price accordingly, cost of materials, how easy/difficult the job was, where the job was, eg: local or not, how easy access was, any known difficulties or complications, plus costs for my time.
I suppose the bottom line is you are doing some private work for someone, providing them with a service, and that has a value.
Give him your estimate and see what happens?
Good luck with it....

You rang? Hourly rates can be problematic in this field I reckon, definitely less so if you're in a professional trade where hourly rates are more or less standard. The problem is what rate you charge - minimum wage?, how do you estimate the required hours? I normally just say something like "Give me 'x amount' for my time as Peter suggests! Good Luck!

Cheers guys, he's a mates brother so should be alright with whatever I throw at him... maybe the kit if it's poo! Lol :D:p

Don’t get caught like I did Lee. A friend asked if I would do a couple of Vikings for a mate of his at work. He’d shown him some of my 28mm little guys and the friend very taken with them, saying he had a couple that needed painting. How many does he want I asked. Oh, only two. Twenty quid should easily cover that then for about three hours work I said. When they came to me they were 1/12 scale monsters….I think I made about twenty pence an hour on them…..he was well chuffed with the result though. Didn’t worry me really, they were a subject and a scale I’d not done before so it was a good learning experience so I just laughed.

Thanks Tim, I'll make sure I know the scale and what he wants before any transactions are confirmed ;)

Ive got 15 figures to put together for someone.8 tank riders in 1.16th Waffen ss winter camo colours,And some iffy plastic crew that come with some of the RC kits.Lets just say the mass produced finish on them is shite. All the figure equipment is painted brown!!!.Cant get the enthusiasm to start them.Lot of cleaning resin figures up,Pinning,Priming,Priming and painting.Might try and swerve doing them as they are a lot of work.

Look into Speed paints or Contrast paints Richard. They could save you a lot of time but still give an OK result. They are usually used in what is called Slapchop technique.
