Hi all

So a bit late, as this show was three weeks ago.

For those that have not been, it has the benefit of being at a small museum, with a range of exhibits (mostly Cold War jets), including a Tornado GR1/GR4 that flew in the1st Gulf War.....but more about that later.

It's not the biggest show but being in the museum give you things to look at....and they have a lot of models on display too.

The usual sample of shots is below, with the full album here: www.flickr.com/gp/139640818@N02/Z6o8N4Y794

Also, if you look here from the 2024 show, there are lots of museum exhibit pics: www.flickr.com/gp/139640818@N02/j256LTy0wX

ACW as usual.

First Gulf War Tornado (Op. Granby)

As you may recall from a recent-ish, latest acquisition post, a friend from our model club flew Tornado GR's in the first Guld War. Their initial task was to attack the Iraqi Airfields and put them out of action, with a range of missions after that.

I happened to notice that the museum's Tornado flew in Op. Granby but as he had not been able to join us, I took some pics and asked if he had flown it in Granby.....this was the answer:

  • Yes, it was 1 of the aircraft at Tabuk. I flew it on 3 missions, 29 & 31 Jan 1991, 20 Feb 1991. 29 Jan, Number 1 of 10 Tornados, target was ‘Al Taquaddum’ airfield, 5 x 1000Lbs in airburst mode. Saw lots of AAA 31 Jan number 5 of 12 Tornados, target was Wadi Al Khir Radar site, 5 x 1000Lbs in airburst mode. Not a lot of resistance. 20 Feb number 1 of 6 tornados, TIALD with Laser guided bombs from medium level. My cabin conditioning system failed and ice started to form on the INSIDE of the canopy, had to call it a day, so no tea & medals. It was a GR1 in those days, the upgrade to GR4 happened just as I left the RAF, in 1998.

He then added:

  • It also says that it will do Mach 2.2 and climb to 51,000ft, only in someone's dream! Clean GR1 will do M1.2 at height, you’ll use ALL of your fuel doing it. At low level full war kit, then 540Kts, maybe get rid of the weapons and up to 600kts. I don’t think I’ve ever been higher than 36,000ft in a Tornado.

And this is the plane:

And now for some show pics, starting as usual with the club table:

And the best of the rest.....

Interesting photos Andrew, thank for posting. The Tornado stuff is also interesting, one can only assume the maximum performance figures are from testing with a clean airframe and minimal weight.

That was the first show I've been to for a couple of years, and I'm very glad I did! Good to catch up with Andrew. Pity no other forum members could make it.
