This could be an excellent SIG! Maybe without any taker....but excellent anyway ;)

Imagine you must build two chess games. Both are inspired on the WWII era.

One must be build using planes. (1/144...?)

The other using tanks or similar vehicles.(1/72...?)

We have the King Tiger, as example....that is the King figure. But, and the others?

Can you help me, please, to choice all the ideal "pieces" of the chess :)

Think about it!!!

I wait for a good debat, there!!

The plane's experts versus tank's experts :D

Polux

The Bishop self propelled gun is self evident.

The Sherman as the pawn, as it was so numerous.

How about an M3 honey for the queen as that can go in ant direction very fast ?

Pawns could be small artillery pieces like the 2lb gun or the Pak 36

A staghound armoured car for the bishops or similar

Any sort of half track for the Knights

And finally stug 3 for the rooks :)

You would need a pretty big chess board for those. What about using figures instead?

If it was my set ....

Germans

Jagdtiger for the king as it's slow

Tiger II for the queen

Panther for the bishops

Panzer IV as the knights

Jagdpanther for the rooks

Panzer III's as pawns

Allies

Tortoise as the king

JS-2 as the queen

Bishops as bishops

Cromwell as knights

T-34s for rooks

Shermans as pawns

I thing the Sherman should be KING, with out him you'd be eating "wiener schnitzel" and going to "Wagnerian" operas...o_O

What about a warship set 1:1200 scale?

battleship-king

aircraft carrier-queen

battle cruiser/-rook

heavy cruiser/pocket battleship-bishop

escort carrier-knight

destroyer-pawn

Vehicle:

Allied.

Pershing-king

Sherman Firefly-queen

Priest/Sexton-rook

Sherman-bishop

Churchill-knight

half track(or recce vehicle)-pawn

Axis.

Tiger-king

King Tiger-queen

Hummel-rook

Panther-bishop

Panzer IV-knight

half track(or recce vehicle)-pawn

Nice idea Pollux. Fascinating.

The Bishop. A piece which is versatile. Can go any where do anything.

The Mosquito of course.

Why. A Tactical and Strategic role. It could bomb, accurately, it could lay markers for the heavy bombers.

Built basically of ply and balsa wood.

Over 8000 produced. Mostly in Canada.

Goring why can you not produce a Mosquito he said.

It bombed at low level accurately hitting the target.

Lancs were lost on average every 20 sorties. Mosquitos 100.

Lancs were inaccurate. Mosquitos very accurate.

It could evade German fighters as it was faster despite being a bomber and having two crew members.

It could provide diversity raids to fool German night fighters. It provided photographic intelligence information.

It could fly from aircraft carriers. It scared the German hierarchy. It sunk submarines. It performed special duties.

It bombed, tactically, the Amiens prison and enable many resistance prisoners to escape.

It also provided the film 633 squadron a film about the heavy water in Norway. Plus a lot of other things.

Produced on spec by De Havillands. What courage what an aircraft

The Pawn.
The poorest the weakest of the lot.

The Swordfish.

A remarkable aircraft should have been useless before WW11 began.

The pilot and crew open to the elements all weathers.

Bi plane slow. A machine gun to defend.

Against the odds it incapacitated the Bismark allowing the RN to sink it

It sank a great percentage of the Italian Navy at Taranto. The enemy lost 50% of its capital ships in one night.

It was employed on the MAC, Merchant Aircraft Carriers, merchant ships with a flight deck

It kept down submarines below the surface which slowed their speed.

It attacked submarines and sank them

It sank more enemy shipping than the whole of the British aircraft put together.

It has the most bloody rigging imaginable. Evidenced by me. ;)

So there the fastest and the slowest of British aircraft during WW11. A just most magnificent pair.

Swordfish max speed 139 MPH.

Mosquito maxspeed 415mph

On Battleships regret the King was taken by the aircraft carrier, Bishop, second move.

Evidence Pearl Harbour. Prince of Wales and Repulse.

I cheated Pollux. I lived through this history. Plus starting reading WW11 at the age of 14. 1952. And not stopped.

I think every one would have their own set of favorites, Pershing would make a good King but never really had the chance to make it's bones, the Sherman and all it's variants was by far the war winner;)

Next to the T34 which was superior in many ways to many of the current crop of tanks at the time, maybe they can vie for King & Queen of the battle field. The most deserving I think though not as glamorous as the others...............Jim:)

I could do with a laugh Jim, so why don't you PM me with your version of world history had we not held out alone against the German war machine for 2 years ;)
