Smart decision;)
The Sherman may have been a winner Jim but not on its design capabilities.

It was an ordinary machine with a deadly petrol engine (the Ronson effect),

a high profile and a very ordinary gun. The only gun, from my reading, was

the British 6 pounder which came a little bit close to the German 88's.

The Sherman wins due to the speed with which the USA produced the Sherman

to replace losses and overtake the numbers lost in the field. Fortunate that the

Germans did not have the same capability.

The greatest problem was the exceptional loss of tank men who were experienced

and the accelerated loss of new tank men due to their inexperience in the fiield

I could do with a laugh Jim, so why don't you PM me with your version of world history had we not held out alone against the German war machine for 2 years ;)

All that may be true but in the over all analysis it cannot be denied that those two tanks had the most effect in the war historically, mediocre designs or not which cannot be said of T34 which was a dynamic design right down to the wider tracks and diesel engine, so much so that the Germans copied many design features in making the Panther

For the allies what about the Russian T-35 for the rook/castle. With all the sub turrets and bits it is almost a castle.

Depends on which factors are taken into account Jim. One factor does stand out it was a pawn.

Many of them but soon to be dismissed from the chess board.

Dunno about that Laurie, I've won many a game thanks to my pawns, especially those who become queens ;)

No, but I'm expecting to if I hear another " you'd all be talking German in Europe were it not for the US of A " spiel again!

But that's mightily close to a political discussion, so not for the open forum, or Poluxs' thread ;)

You're right Patrick, was a bit gruff of me but meant in jest, I would think you would know by now that there aren't many this side of the pond that have more admiration for the Brits and their titanic and lonely struggle in the early years of WW2 ...............Jim:)

I know you've a more rounded view than some of your countrymen Jim - probably because you've smelled the gunsmoke yourself.

Now Having seen some of the figures that Moni churns out I bet she could make a killer chess set...

I am sure that a military chess set a la WWII could be good with figures.

Pawns you have you good old rifle man

Bishops. a field priest.

Rook, a watch tower.

knight. I am sure that both sides had mounted units.

The King... Hmm A general

The Queen... A nurse maybe?

Full detail paint and LOADS of Varnish!
