discussion Do'nt get complacent!

I'm almost too ashamed to admit this but it might wake some up and prevent a similiar accident. I was working on my full scale Motorcycle cleaning and adjusting the chain for an upcoming ride and got my fingers in the rear sprocket. The worst thing is I was'nt paying full attention to what I was doing and when my finger entered the sprocket my natural instinct was to jerk it out,this did even more damage. I'm not going to gross anybody out posting pics ,I ca'nt stand to look at it myself. I've done this routine maintenance thousands of times over years and it only took a split second of looking away to ruin my finger and my 2 week vacation. Be careful out there even doing simple routine things can turn ugly if you get complacent.

Dam, hope it recovers. Thats on potential accident im not going to miss until i decide to go back to biking again, nasty.

Nasty, hope you heal up ok Trey, had a friend working with me at an bike shop, he wanted to lube up the chain so stuck the bike on the centre stand, put in gear and got on with it, next thing he screams out, the sprocket tooth went through the end off his finger shattering the fingertip. At hospital they said he may lose a lot more of the finger because the dirt and oil had got into the tissue, he was lucky and only lost the tip. He still doesn't know why it happened, he said it was just complacency. Hopefully you'll be back up and running soon

thanks Darren,sorry to here about your friends injury.Thankfully I was just hand turning mine,I've seen worse with the engine running method.Still waiting to see how much of my figer can be saved.

Hurts doesn't it! Done similar myself but a few years ago, I always endevour to be very careful around any moving part of a machine now.

(best solutions my BMW, you can't stick your fingers in a shaft drive casing)

Fortunately I realised quickly and didn't carry my finger through but it hurt like hell for a week nonetheless, I lube just a few links at a time now and always work in the lower centre run of the chain rotating the wheel to bring fresh links in.

Hope your injurys not too bad and you heal quickly.

Ouch! Hope you recover quickly! I really don't know how bad it is but I sure hope that it will recover and get you back soon at least into modelling and hopefully back into biking. Accidents happen and who can be blamed for it? We can always learn something from it not matter how bad it is.

Ouch! Sounds nasty. I hope you get it sorted quickly. I was always very careful doing that job as I was rather heavy on my chains! Never got a finger in the way though I did get a nasty pinch from a fork damper spring once.

Sorry to hear of your accident Trey but hope you are on the mend soon. There's nothing worse than a hand injury to constantly remind you of what you've done and prevent you from doing all the things you want to be getting on with. I hope you are back on the modelling bench soon and get over the whole thing.

I once did something equally complacent but that involved a ships engine oil purifier and the removal of a finger nail. Not a pretty sight and neither was the casualty department of the hospital in Liverpool where I got it all cleaned up and stitched back together. Fingers crossed, well those you have available!, it all heals OK like mine eventually did.

thanks for all the support and kind words gang really helps! I'm not totally off the build bench still have 9 other digits functioning, in fact its the only thing keeping me sane at the moment. To top it off I caught a nasty head cold grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Hey, don't you go upsetting my BMW!

Have to say i typically don't think about how little hassle the shaft drive is until I need to clean, lube and adjust the chain on one of my other bikes, or clean the flung of crud from my rear wheel which strangely seems to stick better to the wheel rim than it ever did to the chain sideplates.

If you haven't tried one also, i'd recommend having ago on a BMW, super smooth, no snatchiness even on downshift, put the Yamaha I had thoroughly to shame. Most comfortable bike i've ever ridden too, if not for fuel stops i could happily ride it all day.

very easy to get complacent. i am a joiner and was a machinist as well.i managed to cut two of my fingers off on a 24" circular saw a couple of years ago after using the same saw for nearly 15 years.when i think back i cant beleive some of the things i used to do with that saw.they were sewn back on and are fine now even though they are a bit bent lol.............hope your finger gets better soon.

Ouch , hope your on the mend Trey , I used to race karts and was forever changing chains and front and rear sprockets for different circuits etc , very easily done mate had many blackmans pinches but luckily no more ,

Wow , Not nice Andrew that would freak me out having something cut off , I was in the building trade for 25 plus yrs and have had sitches in my hands , staples in my head , broken toes etc , but nothing serious ,

thanks fellas,wow Andrew glad they got sewed back and working ,makes me shudder to think of someting that severe.Sorry Mike the BMW shafty just aint gonna do around the high banks at Daytona or the twisties at Road Atlanta, will just have to plug along with the dangerous chain and the hot brollie dollies in the pittts lol!
