discussion DR-1 # 425/17 red?

Was this DR-1 that the barron was killed in all over red? I was under the impression by then they were mostly streaky green or were all JG1 planes bright?

As far as I know it was red when he was shot down he kept the colour to let enemy pilots know who he was

Only DR.1 serial no. 477/17 came close to being all red, albeit with white edges to the crosses (with curved sides). 425/17 had a white rudder and outlines to the straight-sided cross introduced during March-April 1918. It was in this aircraft that he was shot down.

The Dr 1 would have arrived at the front streaky green (the effect of paint over doped fabric) and over the course of the aircraft's life (and Von R's!) would become more and more red as the Baron displayed increasing distain for high command's camouflage orders. The Baron saw himself and his comrades as 'modern day' knights and as such should not shy away from combat. He reflected this in the painting of 'The Circus' a kind of heraldic motif for aircraft.


At least that's what I'm lead to believe. He did fly more than 1 Dr 1 though. But I'm fairly certain the one he was shot down in was all red. And the crosses were non standard, in fact I think they were even different form one wing to the other!
