discussion Eduard Spitfire MK-IXc late paint/decal advice please

Been given the green light to order a few kits for xmas , and have just ordered the 1/48 eduard spitfire MK - IXc late profipack kit which has superb reviews but have a couple of questions.

Decals :- a few reviews have said decals are hit and miss on quality , would xtradecals be better ?

Paint :- I would prefer to use vallejo air and could anyone point me in the right direction which main colours are best for this aircraft , I`m guessing the vallejo colours be - dark green - dark grey - meduim grey - pale green/duck egg maybe ? could be very wrong on this but before I put an order in with John thought I would ask you guys ,

I have not made an aircraft for many moons and find getting the correct colours is very confusing ,

Any advice would be very welcome

The standard colours for the Day Fighter Scheme (assuming that's what your subject was finished in) were Dark Green and Ocean Grey on the upper surfaces with Medium Sea Grey on the lower surfaces.

Ocean Grey was initially made as a mixed grey, 7 parts Medium Sea Grey to 1 part Night, as in the order below. It was an official colour by the time your aircraft was introduced.

I'm sure one of the aircraft modellers who uses them will be along soon to give you the Vallejo equivalents.

The cockpit interior was Interior Grey/Green, don't know if Vallejo do this colour, others do. There would have been a Yellow stripe on the leading edge of each wing. Check references for exactly where it begins and ends on your subject. It was suppose to go from wing tip to half span. It was only 4 inches wide, which isn't much in scale. Many modellers make them far too wide.

The identification band on the rear fuselage and the propeller spinner would normally be Sky which is a pale blueish green colour sometimes called duck egg green or blue and previously applied to fighter undersides. Code letters would also be in this colour.

All the above apply to the Day Fighter Scheme in which all Spitfires operating in Europe would be finished. If your subject was operating elsewhere it might well carry a different scheme.

The Eduard decals I've used were okay, I wouldn't say any better than that, but by looking at after market decals you might find some more interesting options for the kit.

I've got this kit.My decals are fine apart from the roundels .So I will be replacing those and using the rest of the kit decals.

Cheers Steve , I knew it would not be straight forward , I`ve just been through my vallejo air paints - many different greys - dark medium light , greens - dark green , grey green and a few others , sky , duck egg , and yellow also covererd , looks like I`ve got most colours , be good to know what other vallejo users have used for a main coat before shading,
