I don't want to start the whole Enamel vs Acrylics debate again, But after rarely really being happy with the finished results when I airbrushed Acrylics I decided to give old school Enamels a go and i'm much happier - I find them a dream in comparison, they spray well and my airbrush never gets clogged.


My question is - Does anyone other than Humbrol & Revell make Enamels? - I realise they are on their way out but I still expected there to be more Manufacturers than I can turn up on Google.

Hannants sell the Xtracolor range Gaz, maybe John has them too?


They're better than Humbrol & many come as gloss. Drying time is a smidgen longer, but they take a gloss coat much better.

Tamiya range also beautifully sprayed using AB.

white ensign paint is also very good. Sovereign hobbies sell them. very good colour matches as well. (most of them)...

I use principally the Colourcoats (ex White Ensign, now Sovereign Hobbies) which are very good for spraying, not so clever with a hairy stick. As Ian says most of their colour matches to war time paints are very good. A major issue now is that there seems to be a minimum £10 delivery charge. This means re-stocking a few colours is not economically viable. I usually wait and make an order of a decent number of colours to spread the cost across more items, even if it means doubling up on some colours. In any event, it makes these more expensive than walking into a hobby shop and grabbing a couple of tinlets of Humbrol.


I'm not so keen on Xtracolor paints. No matter what I do they seem to go off in the tinlet once opened. I have no idea why, some of my old Humbrols are twenty + years old and still work fine. I also find that they don't cover as well as Colourcoats, though the matching to original colours is very good.


I've still got a stash of Humbrol enamels, many are good but there have been quality issues in recent years. I use a lot of these for detail painting with a fine brush and they work well for this.


I have also used a few Modelmaster enamels. My limited experience with them has been very good, they spray very well. I've never tried them with a hairy stick. I quite like the jar rather than more traditional tinlet. There are a limited number of suppliers in the UK, but most common colours can be found.


Bear in mind that these are only my opinions, others may differ and other brands are available
