Just wanted to share my progress on the Teching OHV 4-cylinder mini diesel engine kit. I’ve finished the main assembly of the model.

The precision of the metal parts and the working mechanism really make it feel like a tiny, real engine. I’m amazed how smoothly the pistons move when I turn the crank.

Here are some pics of the current build (see attachments). I still have some smaller details and final touches to add, but the core is all together.

Has anyone else built this kit or something similar? Would love to hear your tips or experiences! Also open to suggestions on what to tackle next.

Not as nice or realistic as yours, which looks like a lovely model by the look of it, but I did once build a plastic kit of a V8.
It was pretty cool, had valves, pistons, belts and was battery driven and everything moved and even had little lights to simulate spark plugs going off.
A great educational tool on how an engine works.

That sounds awesome—and honestly, those V8 kits are such a great way to learn how engines work! I remember seeing one of those clear plastic ones with the working lights as a kid and thinking it was pure magic. Mine’s a bit different—metal parts, no electronics, but lots of little screws and moving components. Definitely more fiddly than flashy Did you ever consider building another one, maybe something a bit more mechanical?

Just finished assembling the Teching OHV 4-cylinder mini diesel engine kit and wanted to share some thoughts on the build. The precision of the metal parts and the working mechanism really make it feel like a tiny, real engine. I’m amazed at how smoothly the pistons move when I turn the crank.

That said, the assembly wasn’t without its challenges. The parts are very small and delicate—especially the valve pushrods and springs—so it took a lot of patience and a steady hand to get everything aligned perfectly. Synchronizing the pistons, cams, and valves required careful checking of timing marks and multiple trial runs to ensure smooth, jam-free operation. The tight fit of many metal parts adds realism but demands precision during assembly to avoid damage.

Despite the difficulties, the moment the engine ran smoothly was incredibly rewarding. Watching the pistons move up and down and the valves open and close gave me a real sense of controlling a miniature working engine. It’s a fantastic educational experience, especially for anyone interested in engine mechanics.

I’ve built plastic models before, but this metal working engine model really opened my eyes to the complexity and beauty of mechanical design. If you’re into highly detailed, functioning models, I’d definitely recommend giving this kit a try.
