Good evening all

It seems like an age since I was at my bench; first a couple of weeks sorting out a health issue for my 90 year old mum, then our two weeks holiday (Canada is great but the F1 Gp was really dull). We returned to find the weeds in our garden had gone mad - not sure whether a machete or napalm was needed, and finally a weekend away collecting my son from uni. A hectic month or so.

I am back and will start to catch up on the vast number of postings and great work which I missed, but in the meantime here is my latest project: another English Civil War bust which I will be releasing under my Sarnia Miniatures brand.

This one is a officer with halberd and consists of four parts. Unusually the shaft of the halberd is a length of plastic rod, slightly more complicated to cast but it will avoid the problem of a bent or curved shaft which can happen with resin.

My intention is to paint it in Vallejo acrylics with some oil paint washes.

Hi Guys

Some progress on this bust - the base coat on the face, some more work needed but a reasonable start. I have also blocked in the white of the collar, I like to paint at least a base coat of the colours next to the flesh so that I can work on getting the right contrast.

That's the theory - if only it worked in practice!!

Hi Guys - thanks for the support and kind words. I am getting there - slowly.

I decided to paint the sash orange which makes him a member of the Earl of Essex's Parliamentarian forces.

Almost all soldiers in the ECW wore normal clothes rather than a uniform the regiments being identified by the colour of the sashes or armbands - in this case orange. Unfortunately both sides used the same colours - sometimes in the same battle! For anybody interested in this here is a link is to a paper I produced detailing some of the known regimental colours.

Next I plan to finish the colours of the buff coat.

Hope mum is OK now. Bust looks nice. Quite simple but well sculpted. Face looks well on the way. The thing I find slightly odd is his right arm

Thanks for the positive feedback.

I think that 'floating' hand may be a bit like 'marmite'. I opted for just a hand rathef than a fullarm because I did want it to remain a bust rather than turn into a half figure.

I over painted the acrylic base coat of his tunic with oilpaints, a miture of yellow ochre, white and burnt sienna, using a stippling brush stroke to give the leather coat some texture.
