A few of the lads have since admitted to me that they also make models.for some reason they feel embarrassed about admitting their hobby.

For some reason this doesn't seem to be that unusual. I'll always tell people what my hobby is,if they aren't interested that's fine. Noone has ever been disdainful,at least not to my face! Some non modellers,who probably did have a go at an Airfix Spitfire when they were twelve,are quite surprised when they see what can be produced from a pile of plastic.

I don't need to justify my hobby but it is a relatively cheap and constructive way for me to relax (it is relaxing,honest) in the time I have between what can be very arduous jobs with very long hours. It also,as someone else said,keeps me away from the bloody television.

It seems that those of us that enjoy this hobby, are many, just look at Telford and the hoards that show attracts each year and the other model shows that are around? Not to mention the numerous magazines that are produced on the subject, the specialist aftermarket producers for the mainstream kit manufacturers and the manufacturers themselves. It seems to me that this hobby is like fishing, many taking part but not many famous ones amongst us. It seems that if there are any famous model makers they keep themselves to themselves. Is it for fear of ridicule?

I for one tell my work colleagues what I do and believe it or not another bloke in the office put himself forward and said that he likes to build as well.

I am proud of what I do it gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the end result after all is built and ready for display.I try and involve my 4 year old son in as much as I dare, for fear of glue and paint being splashed all over the place, but that being said, give him a small 1/72 kit and a corner on the bench and he will sit there quite happily for hours. So in essence does it really matter if there are any famous model makers? Yes it would be interesting to find out, maybe they might even consider promoting the hobby if they were to put their head above the parapet.Lets face it after James May did his 1:1 Spitfire project there was an up turn in kits being bought thanks to the power of the box in the corner. You never know one of them may read this forum and put themselves forward:grinball1:

The guys that work know due to the fact that my desk often has model mag on it. But when i first met my girl friend I removed the planes from my ceiling. (there back up now)

Iam a station master at rock ferry station and everyone i know knows i build kits as my friend and collegue likes his hornby oo guage we are all big kids here and we love it.

i work for a heavy engineering company (sorry employed by) and most of the guys know i build model bikes manly due to the faxt i advertised one for sale and there was a lot of interst - till they found out it was a model (ha ha suckers) but most accept it, they are mainly in to bikes and can apriciate the time taken to build them

i don't know of any famous one's ? but bottom line i would rather be rich forget the fame just the fortune then i could buy all the kit i wanted and still be crap lol

I have to confess that I still have to confess my deep, dark secret to anyone at work.

I always kept it a secret from girlfriends too and my wife found out by accident. One day (not long after we'd started going out) she appeared at my door one Saturday afternoon (she was supposed to be going for lunch with a friend but she'd cancelled at the last minute. She turned up and I had paints, glue and Games Workshop guys all over my desk!

Well, there was no way to hide it after that. When she was totally accepting of it I realised she was a keeper!

Once I've got a diorama or two under my belt that I'm proud of I may "come out."

Other than those already mentioned, I don't know of any other famous modellers.
