And there's me mentioning Jack Hawkins earlier
Lawrence of Arabia!
Fantastic film on so many levels. Spielberg is on record as saying the shot of the mirage as Omar Shariff makes his entrance is the nearest thing to a miracle ever put on celluloid.

Peter Jackson has already made 13 x 1/1 scale replica Lancasters made for the film. There were pictures of them on the net some years ago when there was more hype around the making of the film.

And regarding the dog in the film. Peter Jackson has already said that they considered changing the name to Digger but as it isn't actually an integral part of the history of the raid, then it will probably be omitted.
Fairly sure that the signal for the successful outcome of the operation was the dogs name, so to my idea, it's rather 'integral' to the film, and the pathos of the dog waiting for his master to come home in the final scene, how can you drop the dog?

Not a film but

Conspiracy, the infamous Wannsee conferance, chilling is not good enough!

Brillant acting by Mr Brannagh

Not sure “Heaven and earth” or “Apocalypse now” have been mentioned yet? Also, what about Howard Hughes’ Hells Angels?

They said they can get around that be just saying "Dam breach code word received.". I'm fine with that.

The dog died before they took off Gerry, so he couldn’t wait for them to return. You’re right about the code word for a success breach of the first target though.

Must have been thinking about another film where the dog is sat waiting for his masters plane to land (which had been shot down after the mission) can't think which one though - just thought, wouldn't have been 633 squadron?

HOW about operation petticoat with cary grant an tony curtis an wheels of terror by SVEN HASSEL an dough ma clure in death race

Another must see to add to the list....All quiet on the western front, the 1930 version!
And one from the ACW, Glory. Damn fine film!

Another good film regarding Czech Battle of Britain pilots is 'Dark Blue World'. I enjoyed the air fighting scenes

Glad you like fireflies, it should be better known!
There’s a recent Ghibli studio anime about the origin of the zero that’s good as well, but I can’t remember the name of it? It’s a bit like First of the few, but not about Mitchell and the Spitfire.....
The Wind Rises. It's Miyazaki-sensei's 'last' film, and even though it's about the designer, the Zero never actually appears in the film. But there is a Junkers G.38 and the nine wing Caproni flying ship.

Battle of Britain. "They got the CO!" "Camfield?" "He just blew up!"

I believe the footage is actually Battle of Britain outtakes! Still, we need more films about everyone else that won the BoB for us. Hurricane was mentioned earlier - ropey cg, but they did make Ju88s and Do17s - great story about the Poles and includes Frantisek, the highest scoring pilot of the campaign

Above us the Waves the story of British mini subs attacking the Tirpitz a true story.

A fun one but vaguely based on an operation Guns of Naveronne.

The Wooden Horse
an iconic British film of what actually happened.

I do think that it is those films, for me, which are based on what actually happened are the best.
The others are good viewing with a bit of humour but out landish crackpottiednesh.

Laurie

Laurie, there's a 'remake' of Above us the Waves with James Caan. It's, not completely terrible. But, in true 'sixties fashion, everyone dies at the end

Maybe we should have a thread of terrible war films. But we know what would top the list. Which I SAID no-one need mention
Ever again

Days of Glory, otherwise known as Indigine. French film about North African 'volunteers' fighting in Italy

Does 300 Spartans count. The original one. I mean, we're mostly ralking WW2, with notable exceptions

In the same vein Laurie, Albert RN. They’ve actually got Albert in the IWM.

More memories keep coming to mind.

The hurt locker
Waterloo
The Charge of the Light Brigade
The Longest Day
War Horse

And the TV series Vi
John
Charge of the Light Brigade - fantastic! I had the poster in my bunk showing (forgotten his name) at the point of being taken out and going back in the saddle! The uniforms were overseen by a very noted uniform historian. Waterloo similarly impressive!
