Hi all. Recently joined the forum and have been posting like crazy. Got the bug big time! If I weren't my own boss I'd have got the sack by now! I've figured out the photo posting so I'm going to put up pics of my first build. I built it 'cos I wanted to do the weathering. My dad has a model railway and I bought him a book on weathering techniques a while back, and bought him a premade kit of a coal truck and hand painted his/our name on the side.
Background to the model; odd choice I know, late Russian truck. I read a book called Amber about about russian soldiers in Afghanistan (not a factual account I have to say) but there was a seen where some Mujahadeen ambushed a russian convoy of three vehicles, a BMP, an APC, and the GAZ truck. I wanted to build a diorama of it, so sourced all the kits, put them to one side, had a baby, moved house, started a business...
Got th Christmas this year and was rumaging around the stuff we have in storage and found all the kits! Thought I'd never find the time so gave the two armoured vehicles away as Xmas presents. Kept the truck as I didn't think anyone would appreciate it. A week later we were snowed in, and the truck was sitting there on the side, along with the glue and paints I had used for the railway truck. Two weeks later I was obsessed, scratchbuilding the cage and tarp for the back, adding the ladders and steps, bits of rope here and there. I'm annoyed now theat I didn't research it a bit better, and have since found archive photos that show I got most of it wrong, but it was enough to get me hooked! Hope you like it, maybe now I can put it to bed, or use it as a start on a "Highway of Death" dio! Highway of Death "Kuwait Basra" 26 February 1991 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Need a rest now. TonyB
