discussion Flying Fortress- Italeri or Revell?

If I were to buy a 1/72 Flying Fortress, what brand should I buy, actually; to rephrase that, what are the pros and cons of Italeri and Revell models?

I have the Revell one in my stash and some Eduard PE for it - but I have not started it, from a "what's in the box", the Revell one is very detailed, just finishing up an airfix B24 1/72 and the Revell B17 is much more detailed from what can I recall - in fairness it is at the bottom of the pile right now. No idea however on the Italieri one is like, but is that a Tamiya rebox, as someone said the other day some of them are Tamiya reboxed ones so if it s Tamiya, likely to be pretty decent too.

Er, that probably didn't help much did it.

Tamiya re-box Italeri kits, but not the other way around AFAIK, and Tamiya have never done a B-17 anyway. The current Revell B-17 is fairly new-tool and got very good reviews,

There is also the old Airfix one but that has been around for nearly as many years as me so probably doesn't fare very well against a new tooling version.

You sure? I thought it was Italeri reboxing Tamiya, so you can get the same kit but for quite a few £'s less than Tamiya equivalent? Not that it matters to this if Tamiya never made a B17.

I can't categorically say it's never happened, but I can't think offhand of a single case of a Tamiya kit in an Italeri box; I can think of numerous examples of Italeri kits – Mc.200, A-10, Jaguar Gr.1, Mil-24, Arado Ar196 etc – appearing with Tamiya logos on the box.

Tamiya rebox Italeri as the demand for 'European' subjects in the land of the rising sun is not worth the cost of tooling. So they buy in from Italeri. Italeri do not however rebox Tamiya. It would be to expensive for them.

The Revell B17 is said to be quite good. Have you tried doing a Google for B17 or flying fortress review...?

Yes Ian I have been taking a look for around half an hour now and I like what I see, so I think once the stash is nearly empty I will go and get myself one

Just as an aside to the Tamiya/Italeri boxing discussion, what I do appreciate is that Tamiya also put the Italeri logo on the re-box, so you know it's not Tamiya's own tooling.

More manufacturers (hello, Revell ) could take note...

Do a search for B-17 and then select the kit you wish. You then have the kit history plus other very useful information such as reviews and related products. This is my first port of call before a general "google search" when looking for kit info.

I got the Academy/Minicraft B-17E in the stash, looks just OK. But I heard the newer B-17 Memphis Belle has quite good review in the net.

There 3 bags of sprues, probably 10 or 11 in total excluding the transparencies. Not opened the bags yet apart from one, etched lines, 3 colour schemes and pretty sure Eduard has a bunch of after market PE - I have one set for flaps but I think they have quite a bit for this model.

Do you know which boxed set it is, Blair? If you can find out and check on Scalemates.com you can find out whether the B-17 included is the newest kit (as shown in Neil's pics) or the old Revell B-17, which dates back to the 60s and is covered in giant rivets... I know for sure that the Revell set 'US Legends: 8th Air Force Gift Set' contains the new B-17, as well as a P-47D and P-51B, also both excellent little kits.
