Scott, I'm in complete agreement with you! Let's go back to how it was before ..the good old days ( got my rose-tinted specs on!)


Alan, let's not forget that there's a big difference between critique & criticism - we're all learners, no matter what our skill level is, so asking questions or offering opinions helps us to improve. It's up to the individual if they take it on board, or if they take offense at a comment only intended to be helpful.

I have to say it iam in complete agreement with Keith and Ron I think good ole honest critiquing of kits is all that is required, but then again as has been discussed before are we as model makers capable of both making and receiving honest critique BAN THE GONG there now you can all shot me if you wish.

Or may be the computer Gods can fix it so that a particular rating would not go through with out an accompanying comment, being totally unknowledgeable about such things as overloading the server and such I may be talking out off my a**. I don't know if "critiquing" is the proper word but I think every one wants a bit of feedback on their builds otherwise why bother with a forum at all? From someone who has made his builds for many years in almost total obscurity {except for polite attention of almost immediate family and much thought to be unnoticed eye rolling} I find it exciting to share my work with those of same interests. also we must be careful not to pontificate too much about someone or others advanced skill or high tech A.B. stuff lest we discourage newcomers to the hobby by making them think that they can't converse or participate at any particular level. I know we're a friendly and helpful bunch and I'm no advocate of walking on eggs. Sigh... hope I'm not reading too much into this matter

What I could do though is like what I have done with the GB gong. Whereas they are now only in the completed sections, I could do other gongs so they only show in certain sections. The hard part would be to figure out which ones to have where...


It may just be more trouble than it's worth and more confusion, what with things being in one section but not another..


I think we all need to see how it plays out for a while, then see if further action is needed.

I agree, maybe it's ACTUALLY us that needs to have these considerations and not depend on the "Hypno-Box" to do it for us { keep the smilies though}

This is interesting.. as usual on here, everyone is having their say in a civilized and constructive manner, which is good...


It seems to me some of you good people are either indifferent as to whether these doodahs stay or go.


Others want the things banished to history and as Patrick puts it "Back to the good old days."


No-one has posted they want them left as they are.


So, to save poor old Ian having to sort out which of these things to keep and where, can I suggest Admin. just pull the plug on all them and let the poor lad have a kip in peace?

im quite disappointed things have been changed, whole thing is just a bit of fun, got nothing to do with 'ive got more than he has nah-nah-nah'


i use them as a quick way of showing appreciation.....some times i dont have the time/enthusiasm to actually make a post but clicking that little button lets the other person know i appreciate what they have done


ive had models ive been really proud of get totally ignored, then stuff i think is so-so get lots of likes.....swings and roundabouts, dosnt actually worry me......like i said, just a bit of fun, i dont take his hobby that seriously!


this is the only forum i frequent (and im on 5 model forums) that have this feature and i really like it

The reason why they was added in the first place was because people's thread had xx amount of views and no comments, which made people feel their posts wasn't interesting to anyone, at least with a like button rather than have no comments or short none constructive comments it was easier to just press the button, and if someone does have something to say they have that option too.


I personally don't see a problem with them, if you don't want to use them then that's fine, probably the people that's use them aren't the ones that participate too much in the forum but appreciate people's work.


Maybe just narrow them down and have less of them or even one that just says like.

The thing I like most about this forum is the helpful and friendly advice that is given, not the gongs. When members put up photos of their efforts I am sure it is because they are proud of them, whether experienced or novice, and want GENUINE comments, not gongs that are given out like sweets.

Well there goes a large part of the site interaction...... All done in under 12 hours based on the opinions of a handfull of people..... Not even a vote..... They really are just a harmless form of interaction which some people obviously take to seriously.

There was no fuss about the awards. I just wanted to bring to light how the 'Great Build' award was being thrown around like confetti and had lost any value, if that's the right word. I would wager most of the members on here couldn't give a stuff who got the most or how many, me included. It was just the way it was being used that I thought ought to be discussed.


Amos, I presume I'm one of those people you refer to. I can assure you I take nothing in life seriously, ask my wife! My starting this thread was to show how pointless and meaningless the 'Great build' had become, nothing more, nothing less.


When I joined this forum a few years back, the interaction was only the typed word, the site was better for it, and rolled along nicely because we all enjoyed each others written comments rather than just seeing 'Great build' and 'Likes' etc.


It was admin's decision to pull the plug on all but one....As John writes we still have the 'Like' tab to play with.


Thanks to John and Ian for coming to a quick and fair compromise that should have pleased all members......

Tibbs., how is clicking an icon ' a large part of the site interaction '? Surely it's a very small part of what happens on here?


I think the thrust of Rons point was to encourage written interaction, which can be more helpful than any 'gong ' & of greater use to the OP.

I give gongs to some models where I see that person has struggled but has come through and shown their model.


That is not giving gongs for a superb model it is for achieving.


The only alternative to having or not having gongs is a system of 1 to 10. What hell that would cause.


Gongs can also be given as far as I am concerned for a whole load of things. How the model has been presented, how tough a model, a special effect which has benefited us all. It is not a competition.


For me it is just a nice way of saying I have seen you model I like it well done. It is not that one is better than that one as there is no way with this set up of making that distinction.


The only improvement is to be able to give a gong if you have written something about the model ie you can only award a gong in an actual written reply saying what you think of a model. Not to do that any way in my eyes is lazy.


Smilies. I was really sceptical but then found various things can be said in jest which could easily be seen as not very nice. No different from being in the actual company of some one we use our facial expressions to express fun or annoyance etc.


Just to say I gave a gong to Derek's presentation of the miniature sailing boats then realised it was not Derek's own hand. But decided to leave it one as Derek had brought it to us and for the fellow who had produced those incredible models. There again a gong for an achievement. Write something and somebody hits a smilee saying funny that seems better than no reaction. As human beings we relie on reaction of our fellow beings. I see little problem in all this.
