Good lord i hear them say.He builds aircraft!!!,Well Gary W and his "Firebird" Fujimi Fgr2 inspired me to do a plane after so long well 30 years i think.I read the first Fujimi British Phantoms were released mid to late 1980s and this one and Garys kit was in the first release.These had no airbrake doors open or the centreline Air auxillary doors moulded.Later releases had these as seperate.Only the Fg1 kits have the sidewinder rails and sidewinders but the kit ones are basic but can be made into the Lima version the U.k used on Phantoms and then Tornado F3s.Thankfully Neil M on this fair site is helping me with my hangy things from wings.Ive opened up the Air auxillary doors on my model and i checked my books as reviwers say that Fujimi havent depicted the doors in the correct position.And yep my book on Fg1s show the doors slightly forward of the centreline mount for drop tank or gun pod.I measured it out and drilled some holes and went in with files and sanding pads to open the area.Ive blanked the interior off with plastc card and will paint it black as not much is visible when the doors are slightly open.I read they open and close in flight but forgot the purpose.There are a fair few ejector pin marks on parts due to its age.The engine intakes are basic and usually groundcrews made up intake blank sometimes in squadron colours.It wont be a quick build due to my mobility issues sitting down for long periods but even an hour or 2 is just nice to get the mojo back.

Great Richard!! Going to be watching with interest!! See you remembered to open up the holes for the underwing pylons before joining the top and bottom wings..... I forgot and it was a pain to do afterwards.

Hi Gary.I nearly forgot to open the holes up,Happened to notice them and centreline hole for gun pod just before i stuck the wings together.I seem to remember twice before i forgot them and the ILS aerial on fin.I made sure i did that first phew.
 
It's nice to see this being built Richard. Some years ago I was at Telford IPMS and all I really wanted was a F-4K with the extended nose gear. And I think I found the only one at the show. Mine !

Very wise Colin!!.Thanks for dropping by,The earlier boxings like mine are easier to find,Some still on E.Bay at 30 quid ish.Airfix one is over 30 quid,Hobby 2000 repops are just over 20 with newer decals and canopy masks.I like tinkering around and doing a few tweaks but not into total perfection.Auxillary doors should be dropped it seems but its an easy fix.I can hear my wife saying No more Phantims,No more Phantoms!!!

20250710_134834.jpg Did a little bit today before i had to go out.Got my off white Valejo acrylics out and gave a few areas a couple of coats,Undercarriage bays,U.C doors,I used to paint my Phantoms in the early 1990s with Humbrol enamels,They used to do well for me and were the older formula which hand brushed ok.They were satin finish so it was decal ready ish.Went to our local hobby/Model shop and half of the Humbrol range was gone and discontinued.They do Revell enamels so i could get the Federal standard paint numbers for the Raf colours and see whats what.Im pretty sure i have a couple of tins of the old Humbrols stashed away but where is anyones guess.I bought some Hataka Acrylics last September at St Ives Ipms show.Never used them so might give them a whirl and see how they brush.

An iconic aeroplane, great subject. Fujimi models are not seen that often so interesting to see this built. Like you say old Humbrol enamels are good but hard to come by.
 
Hi Richard, I've been using AK Air acrylics, hand brushed, and I'm must say so far I am really impressed. Maybe even better than Vallejo which I have been using up until now. And they have all the colours for the low viz Phantom scheme. Having seen how you have cut open the lower air intakes makes me wish I'd done the same on mine!

Thanks for dropping by.Ive never used Ak air acrylics.Thanks for the heads up.Might be worth a try,Im sure i had a few tins of the original Humbrol Barley grey in enamels somewhere.I saw Humbrol do some Generation 2 Acrylics and call it Camouflage gray.I wasnt so keen on their original acrylics mind.Well if you want to open the auxillary doors underneath then the Phantom gods demand you do another.If you want another Fgr2 Firebirds then you are welcome to one of mine.Ive got 7 of them left!!!We could aways do a dual build or propose a group build but im guessing there be few takers.

Hiya Joe.Good to hear from you and thanks for dropping by.I hope the Lancaster isnt still giving you problems.I always fancied doing a postwar RAF one in search and rescue or maritime reconaissance version.

But after the FGR.2 I really need to get back onto the Tomcat I half started, and the Harrier GR9 in my stash keeps catching my eye every time I open the cupboard, and then there is the Airfix Buccaneer which I want to have a go at ever since seeing the real thing up close at the Newark Air museum in Lincolnshire last year........

Sounds a plan Gary.I looked on e.bay for the Ak 3rd gen air acrylic sets.Sadly out of stock at a lot of places.Saw one place offer them individually so when im near to painting i shall order the Raf colours for the Phantom.Ive still got my 48th Fg1 to finish.Must finish it as its been waiting since 1994.
 
Hi Richard, can you maybe help me out with the right colours for the Skyflash and 9L Sidewinders carried by an FGR.2 circa 1987 or so? I've read a few descriptions and seen a few photo's that all seem to contradict each other. For example Reskit suggest overall light grey for the Skyflash with a white nose cone, but I've also read they were usually painted BS 381c 627 Light aircraft grey. I have also seen them painted white, but maybe these were Sparrows and not Skyflash? Reskit also suggest light grey for the 9L with a metallic green seeker, which seems to agree with photos of those on the FGR.2 that is displayed at Hendon. On the other hand I've again also seen what looks like 9Ls painted overall white. Any suggestions??

Hi Gary.
The original Sparrow Aim 9es were painted white.Skyflash came in 1988,Sidewinders were Gs until 1978 when Lima models became available.As for colours well the Skyflash and Lima winders were Light aircraft grey colour.The training inert missiles had blue bands on them.Seeker heads for Sidewinders were dark grey or a gunmetal colour.When not using Skyflash in the Sparrow bays ballast rounds were carried.These were Blue and no fins.So imagine a Sparrow or Skyflash without fins.These i believe were concrete material and glossy Oxford Blue.Live missiles would have yellow bands or brown bands denoted missiles without rocket motors fitted.Hope that helps a bit Gary.Our secretary of our club said the Humbrol Gen 2 acrylics arent too bad so i might do a test before i commit to painting my jet.I looked at Hannants site and most of their Acrylics arent available apart from Barley grey.Might end up using the Glossy Xtracolour enamels ive had years,They take few days to set but are decal ready.Id have to spray at our beach hut with a cordless airbrush as it pongs like hell!!
 
Thanks Richard, the colours you mentioned were the same that came with the Reskit aftermarket 9L and Skyflash I have, so that is good to confirm I am on the right track. You mentioned you have a cordless airbrush - are they any good??

Hi Mate.Yes my wife bought me one 2 years ago.Just a cheap one that i think is more of a nail bar one.It kicks out a fair ol rate.Never tried it but i think it be ok for overall coverage.Im certainly not one for all this shading mullarkey.If its a half decent paint job with light weathering and im happy.Been years since i used an airbrush,Not had much practice.Ive got an unused Aztec airbrush and compressor that been used once.I used to use a single action airbrush before on my jets and turned out ok.I used the older Humbrols and they always did well for me.Still got fair few tins of the older formula unopened i got in the late 80s!!!
 
Lancaster decals have arrived, so not far now Richard. Agree, they do look smart in some of the post-war schemes

Back to the Phantom today.Managed to do a long stint and got quite a lot done.Cockpit painted and started to get the main fueslage halves together.Be prepared for fair bit of tape to hold parts together until set.Fit wasnt too bad and just a case of trying to get things aligned and lots of test fitting.Im sure the Humbrol filler will be in evidence next.I remember from past builds that the fueslage to wings fit was a bit gappy at times.This one didnt turn out too bad with just a bit of filling when fueslage is set nicely.I dont mind filling but does get bit tedious but thats aircraft modelling.Its the rescribing of panels that worries me and these ones are very fine indeed.The sanding dust clogs them very easy. 20250721_120209.jpg 20250721_131030.jpg 20250721_131038.jpg
