Garry's 1/24 Italeri Renault R5 Alpine Rally

Thread owner
I have painted various bits before starting assembly. Then some touch ups will be required, however I am not going for a showroom finish, I am going to attempt a "just in from the race" type of look.
So there will be a fair amount of mud and snow slung around, I will attempt to do it justice :smiling2:
This will be a first for me, so it should be interesting.
What is interesting is that the tyres are slicks, which seems a bit strange for a rally car.

This is going to be getting better and better. Very interested to see what materials and techniques used to dirty it up.
IIRC slicks were used on track stages or some dry tarmac ones, wet, snowy, rocky surfaces utilised different tread patterns and construction tyres -
if you had the money of course - otherwise BF Goodrich Off Roaders/ Michelin X for tarmac.

Good luck with the weathering Garry. I too will be very interested in your techniques. Just went through a similar experience with a aircraft build and learnt a lot just by diving in and doing it. As the saying goes..."Go Big Or Go Home."

Sorry Garry an i apolagise for not lookin in on your car build will have to do a ketchup like Allen say lol

Thanks for that information Stefan.

Thanks Steve, yes I'm going to be interested as to what I use as well. Suck it and see usually works for me.

No worries mate, you are busy with the wingy thingy.

Looking good there Garry. First reply but I have been following along. Just many builds on here right now, difficult to keep up with them all.
As Stefee says, rally cars change tyre types according to the type of stage they will be racing!!

Thanks Doug, you're right, loads of builds going on atm.

Nice work Gary. Looking at all these old cars being built, I can practically smell the 'non emission controlled' exhausts from here.

Looking nice Garry, look forward to the weathering
Thanks Mick, I'll try my best with the weathering, it's all a learning curve, but I'm up for it.
What could possibly go wrong ;)

All progressing very nicely Garry. I look forward to the mud and slush.

The little Renault is starting to look the part now.
I have applied the decals, and will wait a suitable amount of time for them to dry before final gloss coat. I must add that the quality of the decals was very good, and went on with no problems, using the usual Micro set and sol process.
As I have an aversion/phobia/fear of masking windows (I always mess it up), I have left them out for the moment, and just added the required decals, and once the gloss coat is dry I'll add the windows, before final assembly of all the body parts, and then start mucking up the finish with some weathering. :smiling2:
Thanks for looking in.
Garry

Your weathering is excellent, looks as though it's been through a river. Isn't the battery big versus the engine!
The battery placement has been bothering me, even though that is where the instructions indicate it should go, but placed on top of the transmission was just not right to me. However when I was doing the decals there was a lightning bolt decal to go at the corner on the drivers side of bonnet indicating a battery in that area.
So just for my own peace of mind, I moved the battery to that corner of the engine bay, which I think looks a whole lot better and makes the battery a little more lifeike. Even though once the bonnet is on, it will never be seen again. :smiling2:
It makes me feel better though.;)
What do you reckon Stefan?
