hi guys

just would like to shear this with you all

Dragon 1.35 german cossacks 1 st go att ,

so be kind -_- ;

i know the faces still need work or some what off a touch up, but when you

'try to fix things you seem to make it worse i think ?

the horses are painted with oils and pastels mix with clear , as the oil gives a

much deeper color and shading with the pastels, with a hair spray finish

were the guys are paint with acrylic,

i do seam to weather things alot as the way i see it , it would not look like it

came out off the shop ,

but when do you know what is to little or too much ?

I think there may be too much glare from the camera, I can't make out much detail to offer any opinion at this time

yes i just saw that will try again and maybe not use the flash,

did try no flash but trun out fuzzy not winning to day

My camera also has a sense of humor. I try a few different combos of flash, no flash and natural lighting, depending on the weather, yet I can still get some grubby shots. But then some of the blurry photos suggests that the subjects are moving. I dunno, I like to think that I would make a decent director or set dresser.

Nice horses Monika (Nothing wrong with the blokes, but it's the horses that interest me) I picked up some cheap oils the other day but have never used them. Do you find them easy to blend them on the subject to creat diffferent shades. I believe they take ages to dry ?

Hi Colin,

yes i do thats why i tryed them over the acrylics,you just get so much more time to blend ,

to what you think is right, only down side is the drying time , but i do know that

Winsor and Newton do have some that dry in about 4 to 8hrs

Any chance you could give me a 'what to do process' for using oils please. Or maybe I should say in which order 'things' should be done.

Also, am I right i saying oils (thinned with white spirit etc) are ok to use on top of acrylics ?

They look pretty good to me Monica. You might want to add some reins though. You could make them from thin strips of paper, masking tape or thin foil. There aren't too many threads on here with horses, but lots of the guys make their own seat belts and harnesses so there's lots of ideas showing how you might be able to do it.

That's much better Monica you've done a great job on the painting I've been thinking of using oils

, did you mean to get that shine on them or is that the way they come out when dry ?

ok will try to answer all

1st of all i paint the base coat in what color i pick for the horse so its a bay so a light brown,

downwards the follow how the hair grows,

then paint in the darker parts like between the legs, around the eyes and neck line,the nose

around the flanks ,and the hide quarters,

once dry start to paint the next coat with the color you pick, and blend from the dark areas to

the lighter one and with oils have lots of time for blending to get it right

hope this dose help you alittle, i will be painting some more soon so will post pics as i go along

may help more

and ever better you can get water mixable oil colors , that are only new

thanks for the tip maybe easy than the tricky brass parts , what i think you would need to paint

or give a wash too, comes with horse shoes bridle, bits all

i did not think that a hair spray as a top coat would give that much off a shine to them but it did

as i wonted a mat finish

i think i good all asked if not just ask again

I didn't realise this came with all that PE! I don't think I'd use all of it though. Surely it would be easier to copy the bits representing the straps etc. using some more flexible material and just use the buckles and fasteners from the PE?

no i dont think i will, use all but change to some think else i did try some but just to hard to shape it,

i will find some thing leather like stuff and use that and use the horse shoes and bits

then try to workout what im doing with it ?

Looking good there Monica. Only thing I can see is that the highlighting/weathering is slightly over done, detracts from the model themselves. Just toning it down will give a more natural look.

Nice work though, better than my figure painting anyway lol.

Would it work if you stuck masking tape to the PE bits and then used the PE as a guide to cut the tape? (You'll need a good, fresh blade in your knife to make sure you don't drag the tape away from the PE).

If the bits of PE that represent the straps are just long, thin oblongs, you might be able to find micro masking tape of the correct width and use it straight from the roll.

Once cut, you can peel the tape off the PE and you got yourself a piece of soft, flexible material exactly the same shape and size as the PE. If you gently stick the tape to some cloth or perhaps the back of your hand and peel it off a few times, the adhesive will be covered in minute bits of fluff etc and will no longer be sticky. Add a bit of paint and the PE buckles and fasteners and away you go.

hi Gern ah that is a good way to do it , thks for the tip as with super glue i would end up with my finger there as well,

so just need to buy the best type i can not a cheap brand from the two dollar shop, will post pics or try again once all

the bits have been added,

hi Si mmmmmm thats why i did ask when is weathering to much or over done, as i use a lite gray almost white

so it seen to wash it out as i did notice i used silver for badgers and buckles but you cannot really see then

maybe if i give it a wash over with a bit darker gray to tone down the other wash ?

hi Colin ,sorry i missed the part off using oils over the top off acrylics ? that i will let you know

as with my street im not real happy with the color but it will do , next step is the weather it oh my,

will be fun , what i,m going to try is to weather some with an oil rub, to make it look more murky

than sharp , if it dose not lift the paint then i will try some think new for tones off gray , going to

try smoke ash mixed with clear acrylic in mat
