Here's one for any Lightning experts out there, I have this resin engine kit for an F2A - can it be used on an F6 i.e. were they the same engine?

TIA.

F2A had Avon 211R

F6 had Avon 301R

no idea as to the differences though

Specifications (Avon 301R)

General characteristics

  • Type: Turbojet
  • Length: 126 in (3,200 mm)
  • Diameter: 35.7 in (907 mm)

Specifications (Avon 211R)

General characteristics

  • Type: Turbojet
  • Length: 126.9 in
  • Diameter: 42.0 in

Got these from the RR engine spec sheet (see here http://www.jet-engine.net/miltfspec.html)

Hope this helps bud.

From what I can see Rick, the -200 series Avon had a 15 stage compressor whereas the 300-series Avon had an extra compressor stage grafted on to make it 16, the differences otherwise relate to performance and construction materials. Here's a picture of the Avon 300-series: http://www.everettaero.com/avon302.html

But here is the thing as ian asked in 1/72 would it make a difference visually? if not stick it in.

This is the puzzle I have, the resin casting is for a different Mk Lightning with a different engine to the F6. I'm sure I can get the casting to fit the model but I am curious to know if the physical differences between the two engines would be visible...that sounds like I am pandering to the river counters! I cant imagine than an extra compressor fan would make a massive difference to the engine appearance.

A lot of great information here, I'm impressed, although I don't have an answer.

I've just been comparing same angle pictures of an F2a and an F6 and the external differences are impossible to spot.

What you need is an engineer on here that worked on both mk's :)
