discussion Here's a great question, how do you feel about Revells?

I've been building Revell kits since i was 8 years old (im now 54) and i love them. The old ex monogram stuff usually has some fit issues and raised detail to rescribe.But thats part of the fun for me.On the plus side they have very good interior detail that in my opinion compares well with modern kits.Ive built a few Tamiya and Hasegawa kits which are superb.But they havent left me with the same sense of satisfaction as kits like the 1/48 Black Widow have.

swap you for the orange jobbies, they taste like washing-up liquid to me.

I'll agree that their large scale aircraft seem very good (i would imagine they are a newer mould??)

I built the Junkers JU-88 A1 1/32 and it went together without a huge issue (maybe a few little tantrums on the cockpit but in hindsight that could have been my old dodgy fingers at fault)

I'm with Barry on this one the Arado was a great kit with some fantastic detail. I've also got the Ju88 in my stash this I gather is a slightly older tooling but from what I've seen still makes a good model.

I think generally revell kits are pretty good, and for value for money/kit quality they are my kit of choice. I agree there is some dodgy kits, I've got the titanic kit I started, but due to dreadful flash, fit, mouldings ect I've put it away!!!! A lot of older airfix I find to be pretty poor - lacking detail, poor fit ect!!!!

Im glad Revell are still selling the old kits.Last year i bought the 1/48 B24D Liberator for £30.I intend rescribing it and ive just bought some resin engines (£7) and Eduard photo etch cockpit set (£10) to improve it.What price would a newTamiya kit of it be if they did one?.

I find the old ones a bit of a mixed bag, in 1/72 im building a He 219 and its as rough as they come, a real struggle, im also building an old I-16 which ok its only small but isnt that bad for a kit dating back to the 60s.

Revells new stuff though is very nice i find..... so far...

Aren't the old 1/48 Revell/Monogram Ju88 kits the reboxings from Dragon?

On the whole I do like the Revell kits. Some of the detailing and fit is excellent and I think the decals are superb. That said, on my last build which was the 1/72 F16 Tigermeet I found some problems with the moulding. A flat section of the fuselage on the side of the aircraft which sits behind the wing and in front of the rear stabaliser was completely missing and had to be filled and the finish on the cockpit dash surround edge where they had tried to get it very thin was damaged. But generally the company gets a thumbs up from me.

It boils down to all kits and all people being different!

Some Revell kits are very good and some are absolute dogs.

Some modellers prefer to build kits which go together nicely and don't pose too many problems in the build. There's nothing wrong with that and it helps to know which ones to avoid.

Others see an ill fitting,poorly molded kit covered in flash as a challenge to be overcome. There's nothing wrong with that either. They wiil find most manufacturers have some candidates in their inventory.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I've just built a kit from Pacific Coast Models. It is a limited run and as ecxpected had a few little niggles to overcome. This does not make it a bad kit infact I'd rate it as very good,but in a different way to something like a Tamiya "uber kit".

I've just started the Cyber-hobby Bf 109 E and it is a different animal. All I've had to do is clean up the sprue attachments and apply glue. It's almost too easy....so far.

It does mean a little research is worth doing before you buy a kit,from any manufacturer,to avoid ending up with one that might make a final journey to the bin

True enough. I'm old enough to have started when every kit put up a fight

I don't have any problem building the ones that don't.

Very true.

I've learnt quite a lot getting by with my current Revell build. If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger
