Hi Steve it's not a side protection plate it's a combat identification panel I'm guessing it's the same on your Abrams in which case it would be white if open or the same colour as the vehicle if closed. They work by giving of a certain thermal signature when viewed through a thermal sighting system. Supposed to stop friendly fire incidents.

Been AWOL so missed the start of this. Exceptional build. Have one in the stash........somewhere :smiling4::smiling4::smiling4:
Although I left the service in 1994, I have been privileged to have had a good look round one of these and drive one still in service..... 2 son's in the REME...... 1 still serving.
