I've just received the Hobbyboss Spitfire V Trop (1/32) as a belated present. Now I am not a Spitfire expert but it looks pretty good to me. I've heard unflattering things about the kit but I've very unscientifically offered the main parts up to Hasegawa and Tamiya versions and it seems about right to me.

One day I'll build it and let you know how it goes together!

Depends on who is giving the slating Steve. Some people on certain websites that i will not mention, seem to get fixated with Tamigawa stuff. If it doesn't have those two names on it then it MUST be inferior

+1 Al, I find the same issue. I've built 2 Hobbyboss kits and they seem alright to my ham fists!!

There's a thread, on LSP, which concerns (among other things) a review of the kit, and the reviewer has actually built it, not just looked at photos.

Hi Steve

I've built 2 Hobby Boss Spitfire MkVs - neither were the Trop version but I can say that the kits go together very well indeed. In fact, I would say that fit is very good, and it looks like a Spitfire to me. Both the kits I built were commission builds and unfortunately I didn't get time to photograph them, one was as per the box art, the other sported D-day invasion stripes. I had to build these quickly to meet client deadlines (a wedding and a Xmas present) and I was grateful that the kits don't require too much in the way of filler or sanding.

Thanks for that Paul. It's always good to have an opinion from someone who has put one (or two) together. I've got a bit of a queue infront of this one but I will get it done,it's a present after all and someone will expect to see it!

I found a comprehensive review on LSP. I don't know if it was the one Edgar referred to.

I can live with that! I may have to track down the correct windscreen but everything else is either near enough for me or easily fixable.

I read the review on the Trop version that Edgar referred to. It's a shame about the canopy but there may be an aftermarket upgrade available when you get round to building it.

My very unscientific view of the HobbyBoss kit is that it might be a tad chunky across the fuselage and the prop blades look a bit weird (something wrong with the pitch? But I did build as per instructions). Surface detail I thought was good as was general fit of parts, although a bit of care is needed with the gun covers (clear parts) and the engine cowls (might benefit from a couple of plastic card locating tabs attached to inside of the fuselage. Be also very careful with the canopy (if you use the one supplied) it is admirably thin but quite fragile. Other than that the builds were a pleasure to do and you do end up with a handsome looking model(s).

I like my models to look like their subject but when all is said and done I do this for fun and I won't beat myself up over a slightly out of shape bulge under the wings! I'll fix the elevator surface (easy- peasy) and,if I can,the windscreen,both of which are very obvious. Other than that I'm good to go.
