Found you by...

I did a search on Yahoo for info about balsa.

I am interested in learning more advance techniques for building and flying free flight rubber.

Nice to meet you!

Tim

Welcome TimTim, Glad to see interest in the art of balsa-bashing is not yet gone. Have a look at Free-flight Supplies site in Norwich. Lots of f/f stuff and more modern materials, gizmos, etc .

Is there a WWW site link for that?

Tim

Hello and welcome Tim,good to see some grass roots modellers here, the delicate art of building small lightweight models is certainly still alive and kicking,if you want to see what can be achieved in building super light scale miniatures take a look at small flying arts, the models in the photo section have to be seen to be believed, light builds is the in thing with modellers shaving down the balsa in kits utilising modern bench sanders to get rid of the led sled heavy wood kits, the balsa is clamped in place and any die cut parts just fall out as the wood is thinned, obviously the slots are then too large but they get round that by packing out with very soft balsa.

I am preparing some tutorials aimed at the small balsa builder for inclusion eventually in that section, best of luck with your balsa models,I love them.

Just out of interest, how did you find this forum? if it was from a search engine which one?, and can you remember what search words you used?I think it would be useful in promoting the site to get more members :)
I am beginning to build a 46" Veron Fokker D8 and was curious if there was any information about it on the web. Just did a Yahoo search and Scale Models Forum was one of the hits. This is a kit my Dad had collected over the years. Planning on converting it from Glow to Electric.

Regards

*** Mark I built this very same model and converted it to radio, she flew beautifully but one word of warning, the way the wings are built in the kit is not really strong enough ,and the best way is to beef up the main spar with some plywood taking this at least 5 rib bays out, otherwise the wings will flex to an alarming angle, the worst scenerio will be a wing failure.

Just for safety on mine I added a couple of nylon fishing trace wires as an extra precaution.

Every Fokker D.8 that I have made as been an astounding flyer and they will rise off the ground even with a small engine, mine had a 15 size motor.

She will also handle a bit of wind no problem.

That's a great tip. I appreciate it!! I was just at my LHS purchasing the

hardware\electrics for it. It is going to be a fun project. Looking at the specs, I see that the centre section actually has some partial 1.5x50.8 balsa sheeting applied at the LE. Do you think I should carry it out onto the Outer Wing Panels as well?

Shouldn't really be any need to carry the sheeting out to the tips - extra wing tip weight isn't good.

Might be an idea to carry the sheet out a couple of extra bays but taper it off to avoid a sudden stress point.
