Nice to watch a different way of making buildings Ralph. Very interesting and very well pictured and explained....


Like Monica, I make mine from bits and pieces, so it's good to see your particular method, which will be a great additional reference for anyone thinking of making their own stuff.

Yep coming along great loving this, well explained and good pics.

Next thing I did was to add render to the building.


For this I used woodland scenic ballast(leftover from my railway) and PVA glue.


I first applied PVA to the building in as even layer as possible,I then simply poured ballast all over and then tipped off the excess.


It looks rough at this stage.But when painted looks much better.

I use the same method for bases as well as walls.....Coat in PVA, sling dust, muck, sweepings, whatever you have to hand on the base. Tip the thing over and tap...job done.

I have a tub of "Crap" that I use for bases also(mainly figures)


I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for you.

To start the main painting process I have given a wash of Lamp Black oil all over the render, window and door surrounds.


Not very exciting but important.(wait for the thinner to evaporate now)

Thinner evaporated (with the help of an hairdryer).


I next used 3 colour's Titanium White,Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre(oils).


These were brushed on as if drybrushing but using the oils wet.


More work will be needed as this is just roughly applied.

What I did next was to spray white acrylic(misted)all over the render,door and window surrounds,to blend it all together.


I then sprayed(misted)various shades of brown on the render.


I then gave a light highlight of Titanium White oil all over the render.


Now I know you are saying "what the hell are you doing spraying acrylic over oil"


Well many moons ago when when I was painting a building for my railway with oils I made mistakes and so being lazy I thought I would mist the base colour on(to start again) and found that it actually looked quite good,with the underlying colours.I have only ever done this with buildings and never had a problem.


I then used Tamiya buff and washed this all over the bricks to act as the mortar between the bricks themselves.

or others who do know,as I said at the start of this I,just go by eye,no real scale,


if at 1.48 its 7mm = 1ft,


so at a guess in 1.35/32 it would be 9mm or 11mm =1ft,?

7mm to the foot is actually 1/43rd scale


6.2mm to the foot would be correct for 1/48.I only used the larger scale to get a better impact to the building.


8.7 mm to the foot would be correct for 1/35 scale.But to make things easier I would go with 9mm to the foot.
