discussion How much flash........?

I started to build the Bristol Blenheim IV tonight. It's from the Victoria Cross Icons kit from Airfix. The other 3 planes in this set weren't too bad but this one has so much flash they could have got another model out of it. Never mind it will keep me out of trouble for a while sanding and filing.

I remember building the old Blenheim IV when I was a kid. Turned out to be a nice model actually from memory. No doubt the moulds were worn by the time they boxed it in the VC Icons set. Look forward to see how you get on with it.

Your lucky it's a small kit ! I built the revell 1/48 Memphis belle and when I opened the box and looked at the sprues I thought it was a vacuum formed kit

If that is the Blemhiem that was around when i was a teenager, and I very much suspect it is as I haven't seen any notification of a new tooled Blenhiem, then the molds used to manufacture the kit are very well used and probably a bit past thier best. That is not to say you can't still get a good model out of it but there will be a bit more work involved than you would expect from a brand new modern tooled kit.

I was thinking of getting the Victoria Cross Airfix as it seemed an absolute bargain for 4 planes at roughly £20. Now I know why.

I had been wondering what this new tooling lark was about and with my issues with Decals on an Airfix Red Arrows Hawk, I saw another on in a shop that was on offer for a couple of quid and snapped it up.

Same plane, totally different construction, it was clearly a REALLY old mould, the panel lines stick out rather than being recessed, it was horrible to build, I'm debating whether to bin it or get painting.

How can one tell from the box when the mould was created?

You can't unfortunately Michael the only thing to do is check out the airfix site on some it will sa new which means it's just a re release of an old kit and then you have new tool for the latest release ,

I wouldn't shy away from old airfix though I get a real buzz when I finish a nightmare kit and it turns out ok , sometimes it's best to do these old kits for experience it teaches you how to deal with problems that turn up in even brand new kits

That's my bugbear with Airfix, putting old kits in new boxes - surely they must realise it's going to be a bad idea if people returning to the hobby or new modellers find an awful 70s kit on their workbench?

Good on you mate, they can be made into little gems. As for the new tool Airfix Blenheim, there are two out in 1/72 scale.

Good on ya! Not a bad kit really. Only been back into building about a year or so after many away and I found this kit a cheap way of practising.
