Masks masks masks

I thought I'd be sane and save myself the time ( why did I ever bother!!

I bought masks from Eduards for my 1/32 F4F4 Martlet V I'm doing. Ok there's not much masking to the cockpit glazing but I've just wasted 2 hours as they don't fit.

Agreed it's supposed to fit the trumpeter 1/32 but surely 1/32 is 1/32!!

I've decided after long debate with myself I'm going to use bare ,metal foil ( it fits every nook and cranny,,,

Rant over

Regards ( no unkind words to eduard meant!!! ( waste of £5 )

Never used the Edouard Masks mainly because I have always doubted them. I could not see how they could bend in 3 dimensions which is what they should.

Tried metal foil and I am not impressed at all.

Best way is to dutifully use tape to get the best most accurate framework. I use blue lining tape.

This has first a could attribute to go around sharp corners with ot loosing adhesion.

It also has good, better than Tamiya tape, adhesion and running with that very little splurging

under the tape.

Lastly it removes well. But score with a fine blade along the edge to avoid tearing the paint.

Patience is needed, no doubt, but when you see the clean lines this gives it is worth every

minute spent.

If I understand your post correctly, you bought a mask set for a different model ? Then that's the problem. Unfortunately, one manufacturer will mould a kit just a bit different to another. Yes, you would think 1:32 was 1:32 !

I've used Eduard masks a couple of times and found them really good.

Hi Laurie you'll have to let me in on where you get your blue lining tape from as I think I'm going to try that

( still have lots of masking to do in the pipeline and learning new ways is always an advantage.

Kind regards

As o quoted earlier I'm not blaming EDuard for the masks ( I suppose it was just my eagerness to cut corners when I need to mask

:mad: :( :mad::mad::confused::confused::confused:

This is the 6mm wide. 3mm and 12mm are also marketed. You may be able to shop around and get cheaper.

One roll will last a life time.

I find the 6mm is the best. Reason. To get a good line it is best to cut the thickness you want with a sharp

Morton blade and straight edge. The edge of the tape tands to get sticky and picks up bits. With a cut

edge it is clean and also the sticky edge is more reliable than the outer edge.

If you have to go around a rounded corner then a thin strip. You can stretch it to pull it around the bend.

Burnish it down on the edge. I use the top edge of my finger nail.

Also use for just long straight pieces

Not as good as the Blue for rounded bits but for dead straight bits the Green keeps a much better straight line

The blue is best I find for canopies etc.

Best to keep the rolls in a plastic bag.

Just to add Robert that with the wider tape you can cut templates to go around very tight corners.

Sure thing Robert - Don't fear the masks, for something like a B 17 or a HE 111 ( I have both to build) they are a 'God send'.....

Nope, one man's 1/32 is not necessarily that of another man :)

Nor that of another manufacturer.

Interesting point I wonder how many new models have their layout nicked and then enhanced directly from another manufacturers model.
