Well I purchased a few more 'bits'. Buying lanterns over the net is hard. In the shop, where you have the option to look at it and get a better idea of the size, it is much easier.
The main reason for the visit though was to get some new dowel to make the booms and masts and some goose-neck's to hang the booms in
The kit did have some material in the set to make masts. Walnut. The grain of which is very easy to split and is actually quite a soft wood when it comes to sanding. One of the masts split while trying to plane a taper, taking a rather large chunk of wood away. One of the booms actually snapped in two while sanding it. Not a happy bunny.
I also needed a solution for the rudder to servo connection. Went for a Bendy wire in a sleeve, a bit like a brake cable on a bike, just thinner. More on that later.
Between naps, (still feeling pretty crock) I got the masts, booms and the spar sorted. They are also a but more robust.

Ta daaaaa! I had to open the hole through the deck out a bit. The original was 8mm, the new ones are 10mm. scale wise a bit thick maybe but look more in proportion.

A pair of nice brass goosenecks now hold the boom's to the masts. The look a lot better than the bit of photoetch that came in the set.
Described as a beginer kit, I think a good few will be put off by a set like this. Most of the stuff needed is in the kit, but a lot of it is not quite what I would call 'authentic looking' like the navigation lights and the cabin vents just being a bit of painted wood. Both are being replaced! I found some deck vents in the spares box that will look a lot better...
More later. (when I have had a nap lol).
