discussion ICM 1/144 Type IIB Uboat ( 1943 ) with base

Struggled to finish this, my arthritis has flared up, and discouraged me from a lot of benchtime.................
I tried to use the ICM decals, but they disintegrated as soon as I showed them water, so I had to root around in the spares. Still not happy with the flag, but it's the best I've got.

A simple model from ICM, albeit with tiny parts & duff decals. I sawed the lower hull off, and used plastic card for a base, with DAS modelling clay for the sea. You could spend days painting the sea, but you have to call a halt somewhere! Crew members were added on the bridge ( 'N' Scale railway passengers ). I must say I enjoyed this, I have a couple of submarines in the stash, and I may be tempted to have another go.

I've found two other 1/144 submarines in the stash, the Revell Type VIIC U-boat, and this little curiosity


This is a limited run model, injection moulded & with P.E. & rather tiny!
Not sure about making it a waterline model - not a lot will be left, after cutting away the lower hull..........

They had a crew of 8 - so most of the guys are topside enjoying the fresh air!

Give it a try! As a trial run, you can use plasticine, or, as I did Play Doh ( organic - much easier to use! ) experiment with shape & form - of course, it depends on the scale - I find it more difficult to make smaller scale ( ie 1/700 ) sea than the 1/144. The great advantage of using kids' clay is that you can wipe out your mistakes, without any body else seeing it. You can pick up a tub of Play Doh at Tesco for £1, so it's a cheap way to get the technique sorted

Just caught up with this Dave, beautiful build. Lovely textures (went through the build log) and sculpting of the base.

I do like me subs though and this is excellent mate.
