Good grief Andy that's incredible!
I thought you would say you had used a template mask, but no, you did the whole thing freehand!
Astonishing!

Thanks so much gents, it makes me all warm and fuzzy knowing you guys appreciate the work I put into it.

Neil - there were certainly times I wished I'd used a stencil instead, but powered through 🙂

Onto the markings. I cut some circles out of Oramask 810 film and placed them as accurately as I could, applying the disc first, then the "hole" around it, then removing the disc, to make sure I didn't stretch the film into an oval or whatever.

First up was a light coat of the underlying grey-green, just to seal the edges and prevent any bleed through:

I then applied a coat of white to serve as a base for the red and create the outer ring of the fuselage markings. Being S M S lacquer it covered brilliantly. On top of the white I pre-shaded the panel lines with a bit of neutral grey (I'm better at squiggles than straight lines 😂)

The on with the red. I've never been keen on the Mr Color insignia red as it's a gloss, so doesn't cover that well, even for a red, so building up several coats creates a noticeable edge. I'll look at replacing it with MRP or S M S.

After giving it a few minutes to dry I removed the masking (and the front MG 😕)

Next up is to spray the yellow stripes on the wings leading edges, and apply the decals.

Looks all neat and sorted Andy. Do you find that the SMS paint is just like MRP. An airbrush ready lacquer that sprays bootiful?:)

Thanks Jim, and yes, very much so.

If anything I'd say the sms has better coverage (probably due to more pigment) but since that can sometimes vary from colour to colour even within the same paint range, it might just be a coincidence of the ones I've tried.

SMS do some matt & gloss finishes too, unlike MRP which I think are all semi gloss.

Occasionally I'll thin it a touch (as I sometimes do with MRP) and Mr leveling thinner works very well.

And I've just found out there is a 500 character limit for comments, otherwise I would have added - SMS Premium Super Clear is an excellent gloss, but as rare as rocking horse droppings..

I've painted the yellow on the leading edges of the wings, deliberately trying to keep it muted and not in "in your face". I've also added the tail decals and a few stencils underneath.

I then used a dark dirt sludge wash all over to bring out the panel lines and a bit of streaking, finishing off with a coat of the excellent VMS satin varnish to take away the glare of the sprayed markings and get the surface ready for some oil work

I'm still debating about chipping. I know it's the done thing with Japanese aircraft but it's never been my forté, so would rather miss it out than do it badly.

EDIT: As always, I'm sorry about how the forum compresses the images, so please feel free to click on them for a more realistic version.

Andy,
That is a show winner mate.

Very kind of you to say! One of these days I might be brave enough to enter something 😂

The folding bomb bay doors were a bit of a fiddle but I got there in the end:

A couple of antenna were added, plus some ez line, and all of the glazing unmasked. Almost complete 🙂
