Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone can help me with this one,

How can I make clear plastic indicators and tail lights look like orange and red plastic?

I've tried painting the inside with Vallejo red and orange acrylic but it's not very convincing they look too opaque to me, I've seen lots of completed models on YouTube with the lights looking like real car lights in that they're sort of transparent red and orange if you get what I mean.

Can anyone help?

I think humbol used to do a transparent yellow and orange, not too sure if they still do

Tamiya also do clear paints that work well. Needs careful painting and a few layers

Same here, I've found tamiya X-26 clear orange and X-27 clear red to work best. doesn't look much to start with but after a few coats on both sides of the transparency it looks the part.

I think most paint brands have a range of clear colours.

If you only need small amounts once in a while, a little paint in a lot of varnish goes well.

Paul. Vallejo do 8 transparent colours in the Model Range .

As I wrote in another post. Try mixing small amounts of the colour (acrylic) you require in with some Johnsons Kleer, and dip your part in it!

Thanks everyone,

A few things for me to experiment with, now I just need some spare clear plastic, mmmmm I wonder if my wife would notice if I stole the perspex from one of the picture frames.... ;)

Try it Paul and if not in to much mental and physical pain let us know what happened.

Actually I use the clear sprue to experiment on.

Hi Paul,

The rear tail light on my Katana build was done using Tamiya "Transparent Red"

I mix varnish with red and orange as Ian said works for me

ive always used the tamiya clear red and orange but i always find the pot dries out and gets very sticky/thick long before i get near the bottom........before now ive used swambo's nail varnish when ive needed red in a hurry, just as good......and if you shop around a darned sight cheaper than tamiya!!

i use humbrol 1322 and 1321 and they do fine for me one or two coats is all i use but if i do another coat i usually let the first coat dry for 24 hours to make sure it's completely dry then apply the second coat

Should have added. Found a few weeks ago after starting to use Mig Acrylic this.

Mig Acrylic Crystal. For, not used it yet, making glass looking objects ie headlights.
