Whilst looking for inspiration in my stash, I found this along with other decanted models. I checked up, and all the bits are thereP1060346.JPGP1060347.JPG

No box, but it should have been this.......goshawk- Copy.jpg

I don't think that is a particularly common model, but as mine has no box, and has bits off the sprues, it has no collectable value - so I'm going to build it - hopefully my new white primer will take care of my previous paint problems - mind you those red panels might be a bit tricky.................

Thankfully, it's a bit cooler than yesterday! The hot weather sends me into a state of torpor, but I actually made a start on the Goshawk.
Ejector seats & panels painted & dry brushed - tub painted, and added to the port fuselage side.

Doesn't that look bad, under high magnification? - oh well, you won't see much of it anyway!
Fuselage joined - not a bad fit - I'll let it dry overnight before attending to the seamsP1060350.JPG

I've given the Goshawk a basecoat of insignia white - I won't post a picture - white on white primer isn't very interesting ( but better than Wimbledon!! ).
I looked on YouTube for any videos of the Goshawk nice one here T-45 Carrier Quals
These are later T-45C models - one thing I notice is that some planes have 'NAVY' on the port rear fuselage, and 'MARINES' on the other. or am I not seeing it correctly? - I can't think of any other service aircraft like that - anyone know of other examples?
Dave

I saw them as some planes marked "NAVY" and some "MARINES" Dave. Shame we couldn't see both sides of any of the planes.

Peter,
I Googled images of T-45 Goshawk - all seemed to show 'Navy' on the port side. The aircraft with 'Marines' were starboard side pictures! - finally I found ONE picture with 'Marines' on the port side, so it just seems to be a curious photographic occurrence!maxresdefault.jpg

Have you tried comparing serial numbers? That could give a (maybe not “the”) definitive answer if you can find both sides of the same plane.

Though the number is somewhat hard to read, your plane above seems to be 165088. However, I think it’s a model that’s been put into a photograph of a real runway.

This, though, is the real aircraft:

It clearly has MARINES on the right side.

Above, though, is the same aircraft, and as you can see it has NAVY on the left.

It could be the aircraft was transferred from one to the other, of course, but I’m not sure how likely this is.

I found some more information at https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/naval-aviation-history/aircraft-markings.html

May 12, 1950
Branch of service markings -- "NAVY" or "MARINES" -- were greatly increased in size and moved to the fuselage just forward of the empennage
and additionally placed outboard on the under surface of the left wing.
Squadron designation was added and located on the fuselage, centered under Branch of Service, and one-half the height of Branch of Service.
Unit Identification Letters on the under surface of the left wing were moved to the under surface of the right wing, midway between the National Aircraft Insignia and the fuselage.
Unit Aircraft Number on the lower left wing surface was reduced in size and moved inboard.

March 9, 1955
Aircraft operated by components of both the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve could now carry both NAVY and MARINE on the aft fuselage. If used, the station name was omitted.
All identification markings, including the National Aircraft Insignia, on swept-back wings was now to be applied along the 50 percent chord line.

If these Goshawks were used by both Navy and Marines, it seems they could well have had Navy on one side and Marines on the other.

The Goshawk is still in service with the US Navy & Marines, even though the last new aircraft was delivered in 1996! At the moment they don't have a replacement.
That photograph on the runway does look a bit odd - both pilots looking dead ahead - and the canopy open - not usual. There are a lot of pictures of 1/6 scale flying models of the Goshawk, and some videos - they are very realistic, and this could be one of those, photoshopped!
Dave

Here you go Dave the trainers were labelled both sides as they were used by both the Marines and the Navy.
Image coutesy of Caracal Decals.
Cheers, Mike.

If this is the same aircraft all through, it definitely has "NAVY" on the port side and "MARINES" on the starboard.

It just goes to show that, even with the 'net as a research resource, it can be difficult to confirm/refute things!
Thanks for all the input on the T-45C - I'm glad to say that the Italeri model is the T-45A, so, it has 'NAVY' on both sides! :thumb2:

I think in this particular case it’s because you can’t see both sides of the plane at the same time in photos, so it’s very difficult to notice this detail unless you do careful, rather than casual research.

I masked up fr the red nose, tail & wing tips. I brush painted with Vallejo red primer. I intended to use fluorescent red, but trials on the test airfame didn't look right. I eventually settled on a Vallejo Game Air Colour - 'bloody red'P1060370.JPGP1060369.JPG

Well, no lifting of paint - only a slight bleed on some panel lines - so I can count that a success. Next I'll just touch up those bleed areas, then give an overall gloss varnish to seal things in. No weathering - one thing, looking at all those pictures of Goshawks is that they are all kept in very good condition..............

Looking mighty fine dave , the red looks spot on , cheers tony

I didn't enjoy the Italeri Hawks I've made, but your Goshawk is looking really good Dave. Nice paint work.
