That's a nice selection there Jens, with possibly the exception of the Panther...it's a bit long in the tooth now. I've got the Panzer III with paint & decals on - it's a decent kit.
Are scale models cheaper? I wouldn't say so if thinking of retail prices. Many high end kits from Dragon, Takom, Meng or even Tamiya go for over £50. But the details in these leave the older kits by Italeri or Academy choking in the dust!
I got the Panther for really cheap to be honest, ~£12-ish, and I sort of thought it could be given to the kids for practise, or myself to practise on.
There seems to be a fair few "nicer" kits of later Panther Ausf. G around and in due time one of them will probably end up in my pile as well.
But I admit to be totally clueless of which models are accurate and crisp and which ones are, shall we say, less... I've tried to look at the Tamiya model/article number so far and picked the higher ones when ordering, apart from where I wanted a specific model - like the earlier Tiger I. The Panther had a lower number and I figured it was an older kit, but it was really cheap and I need to churn out a few models to get the experience too.
I've so far only bought cheaper models from Tamiya simply because a really high-end model would be wasted on me where I am skill-wise today, but as you say - they are miles better than the old Italeri models I assembled as a kid! Also my painting skills back then with dodgy paints and cheap brushes made it look like they were painted with a hammer, and thus my interest faded away...
I remember having to save up quite a bit of money 30-ish years ago to buy a scale model - especially something bigger than 1/72 - and in my head, with Big Mac index applied, these models feels cheaper, but I can be wrong...?
Compared to many of my other hobbies this is on the cheaper side, and in a way much more creative, so I'm really happy I stumbled across a couple of videos on YouTube 4 weeks ago!
When I get a bit more skilled in the painting department (
quite a lot more skilled to be honest) I'd love to build one of those "full interior" tanks and possibly make a cutout diorama to display the innards. I don't see any other way to display the work you've put in inside?
I did bite the bullet and got an airbrush kit complete with a cheapo compressor, that does work despite being cheap, was key to even trying to build scale models again because what I saw on youtube was beautiful and impressive and looked nothing like my "painted with hammer" models as a kid. Wise choice I think!
