In the original post, linking to this video, the OP does point out that this is a time lapse video.
The style of videoing just makes everything look like an animated model. But it's all very real.

There are certain ways to set up lenses that make it appear like you’re looking at a model when in fact it’s the real thing. It only works for long-distance shots, though.
