Need a bit of advice on the US M3A2 half track.

I've just started building the Tamiya one and thought I'd do a little bit of research on it. It seems I have conflicting information on this vehicle.

The Tamiya instructions say it was produced and used in WWII but Wikipedia says it was only ever a concept vehicle that was never produced due to a fall in demand for them.

There is a helpful instruction sheet in the box that shows what parts need to be removed to make it an M3A1.

Before I go to the bother of removing these parts does anyone else have any more information on this?
