I made my last model when I was still at school, I'm 46 now so been away for a few years. My wife bought me the BBMF set and that woke the bug that had been laying dormant for all that time. I have sorted some pictures of my attempts. There is the Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane and the Fairey Battle from the VC set. I was quite pleased with the results. First of all i would be happy to have them on my shelf after all those years off they hav'nt turned to bad but i have noticed that you hav'nt painted your canopys but i would be scared after all those years off but a great build.

I was going to paint the canopys but I didn't have a very steady hand. I am currently building a Handley Page Hampden. I have done the canopy on this one. I have found I can do them better if I use a sharpie fine tip marker.

That's a great tip a marker pen for the canopies cheers for that, see even though you just started back you are already helping people, great models by the way.

Hi Paul . A very nice start.

On the canopies there are, I think , 3 ways out.

Hand paint very difficult.

Buy a set of templates which stick on then paint over and finally remove templates.

Lastly Tamiya tape on either side of the frames and then paint. Make sure if you are using this method you really make sure the tape is burred down to stop paint spreading under the tape. Use a hard instrument with a rounded end.

Any paint which does make its way under scrape off with a wooden toothpick.

Hi Paul, You would be surprised at just how many of us here have returned to the hobby after a period of absence. Many of us are then a bit put off by all the new techniques and materials that are available to us nowadays and the standard of kit detail is in a whole new league. I remember painting 1/72 Airfix pilots and being quite chuffed at painting their boots and helmets a different colour. Nowadays you can get 1/72nd figures from Heckler and Goros with such detail that you can shade their clothing and faces!! Great models though to get you back into the hobby and obviously you are learning from them and already taking the next one to a new level.

Interesting that you are in Woodhall Spa, I am about four miles to the west in Timberland. I take it you have been enjoying watching the two Lancasters flying around recently?

Hi Richard, really been enjoying the Lancs. I was at work at Billinghay when "vera" arrived & I've seen them both together about half a dozen times since. Once flanked with the Spitfire & Hurricane. The sound of those engines makes the hairs on my neck stand up.

Nice one Paul. Your skills will develop as you build, lots of advice and help here. I was away for 20 years or so and when I restarted I came here and haven't looked back. Techniques and materials have changed vastly over the decades.

A few basic tips for you:

1. After painting the main camouflage scheme, apply a gloss varnish. Lots of threads available regarding the types to use etc. This provides a nice smooth surface for your decals to adhere to and will help to reduce or eliminate the 'silvering' effect that can be seen on some of your decals. Then you can apply a matt varnish over the top to dull it all down again.

2. As Laurie said, you can use a sharp blade and tape to mask the individual window panels off. It's long tedious work but well worth the final result.

Looks like you have a good painting technique, your camouflage schemes are very nicely applied. Onwards and upwards, looking forward to seeing more of your work.
