discussion Masking with 'BluTack"

I've just repainted my cheapo Hurricane so I coould practice my airbrushing and I used a generic BluTack from Hobbycraft. Have to say that the I am delighted with the results. Followed advice to press the tack down to give a clean edge on the camo on the upper surfaces and it worked perfectly. Couldn't be more pleased with the results. However, I had left the masked plane overnight and there are lots of dots of residual tack left on the plane. Easy to remove for sure so not the end of the world but does anyone use a tack that doesn't do that ? It's the nature of the beast I know to leave those tiny bits behind but are some better than others ?

Can't say it's ever bothered me so i haven't tried any other 'brands'to see if one is better or the other.

Stating the obvious but I was so keen to try the masking with my airbrush I forgot to leave the paint to cure first. Not just dry. So some of the base paint came off but thats OK as it is my practice piece and sometimes to learn is to make mistakes. But still very pleased with the camo effect.

I'm considering painting the brown camo on the wings of my Spitfire with a brush. I've sprayed the underside in Sky S and have sprayed the top in a Vallejo mix to close to the recommended Tamiya green colour. But I'm concerned that blutack will lift the paint even if I allow a day to cure to do the brown. I know theres no "one way" to do anything but I have brushed the brown on my practice hurricane and got lovely curvy camoflauge. Thought about using wide masking tape and cut the curves out on the mat first.

There are plenty of ways to do it and to be fair the sprayed green wings look superb. I'm expecting the brown to go on well because its going onto a cured painted surface and should go on evenly with no marks. If I had more confidence in the blutack not lifting paint I'd go with that but I'll sleep on it

go with the blue tack - I did a little paint job with it today, on top of a base coat I applied yesterday. Just roll it into a long thin sausage and then gently apply, you are not needing to press it down very hard. Then masking tape over the top for your infill and you are good to go. As I say, today was the first time i tried it and very please with the outcome.

To be fair I think I pressed it down too hard last time. I did like the effect the blu tack gave when spraying. So I will go for it as the spray finish is so nice.
