Morning all

Had a pm from Chris ( boatman ) his PC is having a wobbly so if he does not post for a while do not worry.

I suggested a good old thump with a suitable sized hammer or a proper reboot!!

You jest about giving it a thump but in the early 80s when the BBC launched their range of computers I had a Model B and after a couple of years it developed a fault in the power supply.

I discovered by accident that a good thump with the palm of my hand over the relevant area of the casing resolved the issue and did so for several months IIRC but in the end my dad had to splash the cash and get it fixed.

Hope Boatman gets the issue fixed!

It's a bit old school, but, with the computer being turned off and on, the heat produced will cause bits to expand, then contract, and over time bits can come loose....................
If you take the side off, you can access the guts - I unplug & plug connectors ( only one at a time to ensure replacement in the correct spot ). Memory chips are particularly prone to 'creep ' ( comb sized long components with a load of connectors on one side ), I remove & reseat. Loose memory chips can throw up a whole load of errors, a lot of which seem to have no connection with memory! Quite a few times, this will sort things, even though you've not found any problems . Obviously this can only be done on a desktop PC - if you have a laptop, or an Apple, time to get professional help!.

HI ALL well it seems ok now but last night the bloomin pc kept flashin on with the programs then off an could do nothing with it an I thought id been hacked but so after several attempts to put it to rights no go an jen said switch it all off an leave it over night.
So I did that an this morning I put it all back together the router an pc an hit the router reset an waited a while till all the geen lights came back on an then switched on the pc an it was still like it flashin on an off an I don't know anything about computers an was about to say b*lls to it.
An pack it all away as I would not be able to get It fixed till lock down over but I just sat an looked at it not willing to give in just yet so I turned off the router an then turned on my pc again an I thought well will it work like my old pc upstairs in my man cave as a picture book an no but so inbetween it flashin on an off I hit the restarst prodcedure an to my amazement my pics came up an I sat an ran the pc for about an hr an thought well the pc seems ok now so I turned it off again an the restarted the router an then pc back on an HOORAY the web came up on line SO more by luck than knowhow im back just got to hope it don't do that again or the big hammer will come out lol ps thanks Bob for the post

HI Dave I have a laptop an to wait for prof help will be don't know when but I thought of you last night about you havin your probs an you managded yours that's what made me stick at it an not give up straight away as I normally do so thanks to you it gave me that little extra push to try an sort it cheers

If you have a coal fire, or someone smokes in the house, the cooling fans on the laptops get pretty gunky quickly.

HI Gary we don't have a coal fire as we have C/H an we don't smoke so no worries there an my pc has a cooling unit built in called ICE COOL an the pc isn't even a yr old yet but I must admit I do use it a lot so there should be no problems but what it did last night an why I havnt a clue but many thanks for your link an help

Was your first computer an Apple III?

Never been affluent enough to own an Apple! - Common PCs can also suffer the same problem - a classic sympton was getting different error messages every time it had a problem - I must say, I never tried the drop method of repair.........

HI Dave well I certainly could have done with you to have look at my pc last night as you soon sorted out your one dint you but yours is not a laptop is it I was pullin me hair out as I was tellin Bob I was not bald when I got this pc an printers both of which I have had two of brand new but only got a few strands of hair left now lol

It's also a problem if you use the laptop on a carpeted floor. My desktop PC gets full of cat hair, in spite of filters on all the air inlets.

COR Bob 6 ft drop with pc to desk top (NAH ) I just threaten it with the big 14 pound hammer which is just laid beside it an it seems to be workin ok now !!!! lol :smiling2:
