At the risk of repeating myself, back in the game after about 40 - 50 years. Who knew this could be so relaxing? Is my love of Tamiya misplaced or are there just as good models out there, thinking Italeri for instance.

Tamiya are pretty good, if not the most detailed, but always seem to have a good fit and easy to build (IMHO).
I think the standard of kits in general now has improved over what we had many years ago, only "challenging" kits I've had since my re-introduction to scale model building are the few old/vintage kits that I've built TBH.....

Plus I do think that some people have a bad kit from one manufacturer and then their view of that manufacturer is forever tainted.
I've certainly had bad kits, but I'm usually willing to try that manufacturer again, obviously if I got loads of bad kits then I'd stop buying from them, but so far maybe I've just been lucky?

So far I've built kits from Airfix, Tamiya, Revell, Italeri, MB, Gecko, Mini Art, Dragon, Hobby Boss, Aoshima, Academy, AFV Club, Zvezda, IBG Models, Matchbox, Monogram, and all have been fun, some have been harder than others, but its all an ongoing learning process for me, and I've not come across anything that could not be mastered/completed.

I have found Hasegawa and Meng to be good quality kits.
Tamiya I agree are consistently good and have been for many years.

There's loads of great manufacturers out there...... I really like hobby boss

I think tamiyas problem is they don't do much new stuff but keep punting out old stuff

It depends what you build really.

For WW2 aircraft, both Eduard (their own tooled stuff, not reboxes) and Arma Hobby produce some excellent kits

Some of the Eastern block models are a bit odd, old moulds past their sell by date. Then you have Mini Art who take things to a different level. Plenty of choice these days.

ICM seem ok to me, Zvezda not so much

1/87 scale is tough Not many quality makers ever & fewer now. My hope is that printing will get better & more popular. Neil's stuff is perfect, but most other stuff is primitive w/print lines evident or the hated resin casting w/all it's drawbacks.

well my monogram B58 MUST be 60 yrs old an that is a challenge but im loveing it as some of the tiny parts are moulded in to the model which for me is great but bet if it was a modern kit it would be requierd to trim off the sprue an try an hold it till it goes pinging off into the ehther not for me

That's what you would have with MiniArt, Chris loads of very small parts , a tweezers nightmare.

Just admit it Chris, you no longer want to play hide and seek on the floor looking for those parts as getting back up is hard.. I find walking about barefoot finds things quickly

It just occurred to me since I returned to this hobby about five years ago I haven't built an Airfix kit.
So the last one I made would have been about fifty years ago with stringy glue and paint in little bottles.

So my question is how do they compare these days with the usual well respected manufacturers?

WELL i think they done the job at the time as i was very happy with my models outcomes an i was happy an enjoyin the hobby like i am today in fact i think we are all a bit spoilt with what we can get for our models now but that to achevie the realisum of our models as we all put in a lot of work on these models
