Not sure where to post this.

Anyway I work in a college and have access to various departments including car mechanics, panel beating, spray painting, joinery, electronics, engineering, painting and decorating, hair and beauty and chemistry labs. There's a few more but I don't think they would be usefull in the world of modelling. The reason I'm about to ask what I'm about to ask is because the more I read through the threads in here and the more I get into it the more I realise I could probably pick up some stuff from work and maybe even build a kit in my breaks.

The things I think I could use would be - small snips for cutting sprue, emery boards for sanding, various sand papers or emery clothes, alcohol or panel wipe for cleaning the model before painting. Anything else I could use? I can't think myself, what else would be usefull?

I already have a lot at home, my GF supplies emery boards etc.

along with the rest of your list, i think most of these should be able to be obtained from those places.

lol i dont even know what all thats about.

i was thinking chemicals for cleaning the kit before painting. the body shop dont have plastic primer but ive bought halfords plastic primer. i got some 5ml droppers or pipettes. syringes i could get from any chemist or needle exchange. I also have 2 friends that paint cars for a living so they wipe cars down with panel wipe or variation. and the beauty dept could supply a few nail boards or nail polish remover.

You mentioned "...alcohol or panel wipe for cleaning the model before painting."

In case you were thinking of those small wipes in a sachet used for cleaning glasses and such, I was recently warned off using them because they could have an additive to make glass shiny which could affect paint adhesion. The advice here is to use meths, or plain old soap and water in a bowl while the parts are still on the sprue, and later if necessary to clean off fingerprints, grease etc. before priming.

Also, you could read "The Airfix Book of Modelling" by Jonathon Mock, Conway Publishing. Well written and illustrated. 176 pages including the index. It got me going and gives good info on the tools and materials needed.

You don't need to buy all the above lists of tools all at once!

thanks steve. i saw laurie, i think, mention acetone for wiping down the kit. i was thinking of using the cotton wool pads to wipe down the entire kit pre primer and after the primer. i do have a little panel wipe in the shed but I'm miles away from trying it.

Isopropyl alcohol is useful if you can get it.We have 25L drums of the stuff at work.I use it for thinning Tamiya paints and for cleaning out the airbrush when I've been spraying acrylics.

I am a beginner so what do I know, but I haven't yet seen a reason for wiping down the entire kit after the primer coat or any other coat (unless of course it got covered in dust). My first model has been primed and the under surface given a coat of colour. To avoid dust gathering I am keeping the model in a clean zip-up kitchen plastic bag until the next stage.

I've just bought the legit tamiya thinner. As im still learning I want to reduce any dodgy variables. When im more confident I might try the alcohol. Incidently I thin 50 50 what ratio do you thin?

I haven't even sprayed an entire plane yet so I have literally zero experience.

I thin it about 50/50 as well.But I don't measure it.

Lead shot or weights are for using on those aircraft with nose landing gears other wise they'll sit on their tails. I use deluxe materials liquid lead.
