Hi all

I have recently got back into modelling after many years, I'm currently building a 1/48 Eduard spitfire mark IXc late version which so far has been an absolute joy if I'm honest but I'm looking for the next one already.

I've narrowed down to either a Eduard 109 which I'm sure will be a similar project to the spitfire but I can also get my hands on a Hasegawa

AV-8B Harrier II 'Night Attack' scale 1/48.

I have always wanted to do a harrier so has anyone got any views on this model?

Thanks in advance

Phil

Save a Bob or WTO and look for the Revell boxing of it. It's Hasegawa plastic in the box.

Builds into a very nice Harriet. Be careful with the cockpit section when you glue it to the main fuselage section. It's a question oh two large lumps of plastic and a very small glueing area.

Other than that she's fine.

Do not go near the Tamiya. Must be their worst model. The intakes little flaps were non existent and they make or break the model of a Harrier.

The Harrier is a nice model to build. For me I like the Sea Harrier as it more character than the RAF version. Also has a back ground with the role played in the Falklands.

A very nice aircraft to have on the shelf. Build a Falklands Wessex and you have a unique pair.

I actually went ahead and purchased the revel harrier on Ian's say so and I can confirm it is the same plastic. I also bought Eduards 109 which looks very nice. Does anyone know where I can get a resin/photo etch set for the revel harrier 1/48?

Phil (welcome) this one seems to fit the bill. It is on Eduard site as a Hasegawa which as Ian says is the Harrier you have in a Revell overcoat http://www.eduard.com/store/Eduard/Photo-etched-parts/Zoom-set/Aircraft/1-48/Harrier-Gr-Mk-7-1-48.html.

Eduard products are very nice. I have the 1/48 Spit Mk VIII, the 1/48 Soitfire Mk IX limited edition, the 1/48 Hellcat and the recent 1/48 Bf 109G-6. Although the G-6 isn't extremely accurate, it has outstanding detail.

For beginners, I do not recommend Tamiya. Their decals are absolute rubbish and will put you off modelling. The decals break upon contact with water, and are extremely low quality. I spent an infuriating week trying to get them to work until I went and bought AM decals. The fit is excellent, but if you want an OOB build, do not go for Tamiya.

Thanks for all the informative response the Messerschmitt I picked up is the Bf 109e-1 which has the engine included which is a nice touch, now it's a toss up of what one to do once finished the spitfire, where is the best place to post a progress with pics or do I just start a new thread? That's if anyone's intersted

I have to ask this; Just hw many Tamiya builds have you based this rather harsh dismissal of Tamiya kits. I have built a good few (50+ maybe) and have only had decal issues with two or three. All of which where of an age where I would put it down to the decals having not faired well in a over hot shop display or window.

I have a good 20-30 Tamiya kits, but 75% of them have AM decals. Last one I did was the spit MK Vb Trop in 1/48, and when I put the stencils in the water, they literally desintegrated. However, I am not dismissing them. They are great kits, but not so great decals.

Cheers, John

Hasegawa Harrier is superb and the Revell boxing is cheaper as has been pointed out.

Also, the harrier is quite an old kit, with raised panel lines. It is about time Tamiya made a new harrier. Additionally, it would be great if they stepped up their decal quality.

John I never put my decals in water, used to, but not now. I very lightly spray the backing paper and leave until the decal will just slide.

That is a good method, but the Tamiya decals broke Before I touched them....

I have never had any problems with tamiya decals. Like most decals you do need to be careful with them.
