Big Hands? - 1/32
Medium Hands? - 1/48
Dainty Hands? - 1/72
A lot can depend on how much space you have for display
for example - on a A3 sheet you could fit one X 1/32 Aircraft, or two 1/48 aircraft, or four 1/72 aircraft -obviusly depending on the type of arcraft!

Hi Steven. The second number is the reduction factor compared to the real thing. 1/2 is half sized, ie real thing divided by 2, 1/4 is quarter size, real thing divided by four, etc. So, as Paul says, the bigger the number the smaller the model compared to the real thing. The actual size of the model of course depends how big the real thing is…..

Oh Wow, how erudite is that! (Not bad phraseology for a Grunt I reckon!)

Steven, welcome to the forum, where common sense goes out the window most days, as you have observed in most of the replies from the children....
Scale, give each one a try and whichever you are comfortable with, then that is your scale. You can of course divert occasionally to the other scales if something takes your interest. To confuse you even more over the last few years we have seen the emergence of 3D printed models which are slowly taking over from cast resin models.
The common factor we all have is our love for modelmaking and it does not matter if you are a complete novice or an experienced modeller, we all make mistakes and we all put the question on the forum, that way we learn... (although some take longer - it is an age thing).
Once again welcome and looking forward to seeing your work.

You guys owe me a coffee - I've spat out most of my previous one whilst laughing reading this thread!

Is there such a thing as a 'best scale', not really, even tiny little 1/144 aircraft have some seriously good detail these days, just go with what takes your fancy - and you certainly don't have to stick to particular scale. I generally flit between 1/72 for Aircraft and 1/35 for Armour (or at least I would if I could ever blooming finish anything) with the very occasional dips into 1/48 and 1/144 Aircraft.

I do hope you enjoy it here, I've only been here for a short time and have been made to feel very welcome - which means a lot. So pull up a chair, grab a coffee and a triple fried egg sandwich, and get stuck in...
